What is biophilic interior design?

The word biophilic derives from the word biophilia which refers to a love of nature. In short biophilic interior design means incorporating nature into our indoor environment.

Biophilic design focuses on creating a space which offers a sense of calm and connection to nature. Thee are a great number of benefits to bringing the outside into your home. Let's take a look at them.

Why is biophilic interior design important?

Improved mental health

Biophilic design has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health, reducing stress and improving moods. The presence of natural elements can create a calming and soothing atmosphere, which can have a positive effect on mental health and well being.

Enhanced creativity and productivity

Studies have shown that incorporating biophilic interior design can increase creativity and productivity. Being surrounded by nature improves cognitive function and overall productivity. It's an especially great addition to a workplace environment.

Better air quality

Using plants in the home improves air quality as they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This helps purify the air and reduces harmful pollutants.

More pleasant environment

Biophilic interior design can help create a more comfortable indoor environment. Greenery helps regulate temperature, humidity, and improve light levels. By introducing natural elements into interior spaces, you can create a more pleasant and enjoyable environment.

Incorporating biophilic interior design into the bedroom

1. Add potted house plants

The simplest way you can incorporate biophilic interior design to your bedroom space is with the addition of house plants. It's best to have varying heights with your plants to give the appearance of a more natural look. Pots should embody a natural theme too. Materials such as rattan, wicker and stone should be preferred.

2. Use reclaimed or recycled wood as a headboard

A reclaimed or recycled wooden headboard is a sure fire way to incorporate nature into the bedroom. Live edge and raw unfinished wood gives a more natural look and creates a visual impact with interior design. A reclaimed wood headboard would make an impressive feature of the bed in your nature inspired bedroom.

3. Colours inspired by nature

Neutral and earthy tones are crucial when designing your biophilic bedroom. Subtle tones shouldn't be underestimated, as in this case they'll make your space super impactful. Colour shouldn't be limited to just walls: You could incorporate a natural colour scheme through furniture and with fabric choices too.

4. Make the most of natural light

Natural light plays a bit part in regulating our emotions. This is why it's so important when designing a biophilic space to make the absolute most of it. Blinds should be considered instead of, or as well as curtains as it means you can manipulate the light that bit better. Dimmer switches are also a good idea for this if you're limited with window space.

5. Consider a vertical garden

Vertical gardens may be considered boujee, but there's no denying the impact they can have on a space. They're great as well if you don't have a huge amount of space in your bedroom.

6. Natural wall coverings

A unique, but effective way of giving your bedroom a more biophilic design is with a cork wall. Cork is a natural, biodegradable material, great for this type of style, but it's also amazing at insulating. Cork is brilliant for keeping heat in a room as well as acting as a sound barrier. If your bedroom backs onto the adjoining house for example, this would be a great barrier.

7. Create a cosy nook

As biophilic interior design promotes better mental health it's important to design specific nooks which make you feel good. A cosy space in your bedroom where you could read or spend half an hour escaping the children is crucial for promoting well being.

8. Include nature inspired artwork

Bringing the outside in through artwork is an easy way to incorporate biophilic interior design. It packs a punch and there's absolutely no upkeep! It's a win win situation. There's a number of different print companies available, you could even have a go at making something yourself. I'd recommend either wooden or rope style hanging frames to continue the organic theme.

9. Choose organic shapes

When you think of natural, earthy design you think of organic flowing lines. This should be the same when designing your biophilic bedroom. Think curved headboards and light fittings. You don't want anything too harsh to spoil the look of your au-naturel bedroom.

10. Opt for natural fabrics

Similarly to wall coverings, you need to opt for natural fabrics in the bedroom. I'd recommend linen as it's super hard wearing and an eco-conscious material too. Linen bed sheets are more on the expensive side, but for this look I think they're really worth it.

Incorporating biophilic interior design in the bedroom can be achieved through simple methods. You can add as little or as much as you'd like. With these small changes, you can create an oasis that promotes well-being, comfort, and hopefully a better nights sleep.

This type of decor is right up my street! We have lots of house plants in our house and a lot of natural wood too, but I definitely wish we'd gone for greener colours when we'd been decorating!

This is fascinating! I had no idea that's what biophilic meant! We try to bring as much of the outside in as we can but with two cats who are prone to eating plants, it can be hard!
