Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself is take a little time away from your usual routine. Whether it's browsing a local bookshop, enjoying a coffee somewhere new, heading out for a peaceful walk or enjoying a casual activity like Color Game, spending time on things you enjoy can be a lovely way to recharge. And the best part? You don't need an expensive spa day to treat yourself.
Planning a solo self-care day is about choosing activities you genuinely enjoy, slowing down and making the most of your free time. Here's how to plan a day that feels special without spending too much.

Planning a Solo Self-Care Day on a Realistic Budget
1. Decide What You Want From Your Day
Make sure to decide on plans only after considering what you want. Is tranquility what you long for? Do you wish to visit other places and try an art activity as well as to spend your time leisurely and joyfully?
Your answer will be an indicator of how you should plan your day. If you are fed up with your daily routine, you can consider going to a nearby town. However, for quiet people, visiting a bookstore, walking, and drinking coffee together could be the best option.
There is no right or wrong activity to do on your own, just try to engage in enjoyable activities instead of compiling a to-do list.
2. Set a Realistic Budget
When out on a day out, expenses can be quick to pile up. After a few coffees, a lunch and a spontaneous buy, you can find yourself spending much more than intended. Set a budget for yourself, whether it is £10, £20 or whatever you feel is affordable.
Once you decide on this figure, think about how to split it between transport, food and any attractions. A budget does not necessarily need to cover all aspects of your day.
Rather, you could take a packed lunch along with you, which would allow you to save more money for the things that are more enjoyable, like the coffee in an independent cafe, for example.
3. Choose Affordable Activities You'll Enjoy
You don't have to spend a lot of money for an exciting day alone. Sometimes what you can do that is the simplest can be the most fun.
Here are few examples that you might enjoy:
- Check out places nearby: Visit any local park, beach promenade, botanical garden or small city you fancy to see.
- Wander through the booksellers' shop, or a second-hand shop: Take your time, look around, or purchase something you like.
- Attending an attraction for free of charge: Find some local art galleries or community events.
- Engaging in creative activity: Take pictures or make sketches of everything around.
If you are in the North East area, a coastal walk or a trip to a nearby town could be a good option. Make sure to check the operation hours and travel expenses beforehand.
4. Plan the Details Without Overplanning
Doing a bit of groundwork ahead of time can ensure your day is more enjoyable. Find out about the available transport means, how long it will take to reach your destination and if any activity needs to be booked in advance.
While planning, do not forget about the weather. Think of comfortable shoes, right clothing and some necessities which can make your day pleasant and carefree.
Yet, this does not mean that every minute of your time should be planned. It would be better to plan a bit of “free” time in order to visit an interesting shop or take a longer walk.
The best thing about being alone is that you can always change your plans spontaneously.
5. Make the Day Feel Special in Small Ways
You don’t have to invest huge amounts of money to turn your day into something special. The little things can be just as unforgettable!
Choose something to wear that makes you feel comfortable, prepare a playlist for your journey, or pick a book to read on the way. You can also take pictures to capture the sights you see.
Try not to distract yourself from the peaceful moments by constantly checking your phone. Enjoy the beauty around you, relax, and don’t feel like you need to record everything.
Self-Care Doesn't Have to Be Expensive
A solo self-care day does not involve financial concerns or complexity in one’s plans. It focuses on enjoying the little things one has not appreciated so far in the whirlwind of activities.
In some cases, a person can opt for a trip to the new place, while in others, a simple walk and eating their favorite dish will do.
To start, it is recommended to do something one is used to doing, spend money wisely, and disregard the need for the entire day to be perfect.
