Show your child what to look out for.
A lot of different risks online look similar and can be easily spotted if you know what to look out for. Show your child lots of different examples so that they can keep an eye on what they’re browsing. There’s a lot to look out for, so it’s wise to keep up to date on the latest attempts at confusing people online. Thankfully there are a lot of resources out there to show your child exactly what to keep in mind and what they’ll need to do if they find something risky online.
Add parental controls to your internet and explain why you do this.
Your child may find that browsing online reaches some blocks in the road. Parental controls should be applied from your internet provider to protect children from accessing risky websites. Explain to your child why these are in place and how they work to protect your child from viruses and criminals, as well as ensuring they only access the websites they need to access.
Remind your child what’s important about sensitive information.
Sensitive information should never be shared online and can pose a threat to criminals if your child shares them. If there are any important pieces of information your child knows, like telephone numbers, addresses, and even payment information, then you should let your child know how crucial it is to keep these details protected.
