The Pottery Loft is a family friendly pottery painting studio in Billingham where visitors can choose from a huge range of pottery items and decorate them however they wish. It's a very open ended, free reign type of vibe, which I absolutely love. Once your masterpiece is complete, the team glaze and fire it before it's ready to collect.

Alongside pottery painting, you can also enjoy a cafe, children's soft play area, special events and seasonal activities throughout the year. Be sure to check out their prosecco and paint events if you fancy going sans children!

You'll find the Pottery Loft in the North East town of Billingham. It's located close to High Grange Park, with lots of local amenities close by. A large free car park is available just outside too which is great if you're an anxious parker like myself.

Our Pottery Loft Review

Pottery Painting

Our pottery experience began by choosing out which ceramic figures my three year old would be painting. There was a huge selection of ceramics available to paint. I was really surprised by how much was available. There's a full walled selection of items to paint, including:

• Mugs
• Plates
• Bowls
• Animal figurines
• Money boxes
• Seasonal decorations
• Gift items

My eldest opted for a rather charismatic looking ceramic sloth whilst I chose a heart shaped plate.

She then had to choose six colours to paint her sloth. Again there was a huge selection of paints available and the staff assisted her really well in picking colours. She obviously wanted to go wild with the colours, which is totally fine, her prerogative and all that. But they we're really good at reigning her in a bit. My silence must have spoken a thousand words!

We sat for half an hour or so whilst my daughter painted the sloth. It's the most 'in the zone' I've seen her for a while. She really enjoyed the process of painting the ceramic. You better believe the concentration tongue was out!

It's worth noting at this point you're unable to take pottery items home with you there and then. Once painted they then go into a kiln to give them a fantastic glaze and will be ready in approximately 7-10 days.

The Cafe

There is a small but very adequate cafe within the pottery space. They had everything you'd come to expect from a modest cafe; Hot and cold drinks, scones, snacks and sandwiches.

I was pleasantly surprised that the staff offered table service too which was particularly handy, especially with two small humans running beneath my feet.

Whether you're enjoying a coffee while the children play or having a bite to eat after painting, having cafe facilities on site adds to the overall experience. For parents, it's often these little extras that make a family attraction more enjoyable and convenient.

The cafe obviously isn't the Ritz, I'm not going to lie... But that's not what you come here for. The cafe is an add on to the activity which is pottery painting in Teesside. I really can't fault the cafe at all.

Soft play

Towards the back of the room there is a small soft play area. It's fully enclosed with foam walls so small humans (like my youngest) can't escape. It's safe and secure and I really appreciated how I could watch one child while the other child was playing safely within the space.

I would say the soft play area is aimed more towards younger children. I have a one year old and an almost four year old (sob) and found both of them really enjoyed it. For anyone older, I suppose the pottery element of the space is really what they're more invested in.

For families with younger children, this can be a huge bonus. While older children focus on painting, younger siblings can enjoy the soft play facilities. This helps make the venue suitable for a wider age range and allows families to spend longer enjoying their visit.

Is The Pottery Loft Suitable for Toddlers?

Yes, The Pottery Loft is suitable for toddlers and younger children. The soft play area provides an additional activity option, while many of the pottery choices are simple enough for younger children to enjoy decorating with support from parents. As always, younger children will require supervision during pottery painting sessions. Please do watch your younger children handling the ceramics. Breakages aren't fun for anyone, the kids, yourself as a parent or the business itself.

How Much Does The Pottery Loft Cost?

There is a £5 charge to reserve one of seven tables at the Pottery Loft. This gives you two hours painting, playing and dining time. This pricing hasn't changed since 2022 which I think is really great. It's nice to see a small business keeping their prices the same instead of hiking them up.

There are extra charges of course for the pottery items as well as ordering from the cafe. I found the prices of both to be really reasonable. If anything, the food from the cafe was really affordable (another reason why we're returning visitors). To give you an idea on what to expect, plate sizing currently ranges from £8-£45. It all depends on the type of items you choose as well as how many pieces you decide to paint. You could make this rainy day activity as expensive or as affordable as you'd like.

The £5 deposit you paid to reserve the table will then be deducted from your final bill.

How Accessible Is The Pottery Loft Billingham?

Accessibility is a big thing for me these days and unfortunately this is where I feel the Pottery Loft is lacking slightly. Yes, it's accessible, there's a lift going upstairs to the space however unfortunately when we visited the building felt like a construction site. It felt quite difficult to navigate with the pram.

You could say this has nothing to do with the Pottery Loft themselves as it's the building rather than their space, but first impressions weren't particularly welcoming. Which is a shame, because their area and the space the Pottery Loft owns was immaculate.

I'm sure this isn't the case now in 2026, but I wanted to make you aware of my family and I's experiences.

In our opinion, yes! The Pottery Loft offers something a little different from many traditional family attractions. It combines creativity, relaxation and family fun in one location, making it suitable for a wide range of ages. Pottery painting is a real 'fun for all the family' event.
