As a self employed mother of two I've been called a 'mum boss' on a number of occasions. It's always said as a compliment & in admiration for the amount of plates I'm spinning at any one time. My lifestyle is praised and glamorised, but the term couldn't be further from the truth.

Being a 'mum boss' isn't glamorous. What I do isn't glamorous. It's bloody hard work. There's no blood, or sweat, but let me tell you there's been a whole load of tears at times. Let me tell you why the term mum boss needs to go into room 101... Immediately.

Mum Boss: A badass woman who raises babies & grows businesses. Takes charge of the day and gets the job done. Someone who is gentle yet deliberate while leading by example.

urban dictionary

I'm not gentle, nor am I deliberate. I don't take charge of the day and very rarely get my jobs done. I'm not the mum boss I'm made out to be. I'm just a normal working mother trying my best to get through the day.

The downsides of being a mum boss.

I've been self employed for just over a year now. Although I didn't have the smoothest start I've certainly learnt a lot during my first year of being a freelance blogger. There's a lot of things I love about my career choice. But there are more than a few things that really grind my gears...

I can't switch off.

It's not uncommon for a self employed person to be unable to switch off. My problem as a mother is that any time I get away from my children, for example during nap times or when they've gone to bed, I spend frantically working. And anytime I get away from working I'm of course with my children.

I don't have any chill & I don't know how to relax. Not that it feels like I can or should as I'm constantly switched on.

There are no sick days.

We recently had covid as a family. Families that quarantine together, stay together right? Whilst my Husband, who works a usual 9-5 role was able to call in sick, little old me was still working away.

I feel like I'm unable to take sick days as time away from work essentially means time away from money. This mentality although I think understandable can be incredibly damaging. It's certainly not a boss mum leading by example.

The hours are horrendous.

Parenting two children is very demanding. It's a full time job (and then some) in itself which means my working hours are very limited. No two days are the same. Some days I do feel like a mum boss (bleugh) and others I wallow in my own self pity.

Take today for example, I was up with the baby at 3.30am. After feeding and changing she's usually awake for 1.5-2 hours. It's a pain in the ass, but it's a life we've become accustomed to. This means I was working this morning for an hour from 4am-5am. I don't need to you tell me that that's not normal. My day was really full on so I didn't get to sit back down at the laptop again until they'd both gone to bed at 9pm. By this point I've already clocked off for the day so only managed another hour of work as I was on countdown to the night feed.

My working hours are a struggle at the moment. Although I'm hoping it's not for long once my baby starts sleeping through the night. Pray for me!

The demand to be good at everything.

As a blogger I have to have my finger in a lot of pies. With the demand to be present across a number of different social platforms comes the inevitable disappointment that I can't be good at everything.

Instagram in particular is my biggest struggle at the moment. I understand the amount of work that does into being good at Instagram. But that certainly feels like a full time job in itself. One I can't quite accommodate for right now.

The lack of pride in my appearence.

When i worked a regular job I used to take pride in my appearance. I'd do my hair and make up every morning to make myself presentable for the day. Nowadays things are much different. I can't remember the last time I wore makeup. And it's very rare I don't wear my hair in a mum bun (gah, I hate that term).

It's not that I don't care, it's just that I can't be bothered. There's no real need for me to get dressed up now. My kids couldn't care less what I look like.

My appearance certainly doesn't convey that of a mum boss. Don't believe what my Instagram feed tells you, come over to my stories! Then you'll get the real me.

It's a constant job search.

For me this is one of the worst things about being a full time blogger. We don't get things handed to us on a plate. We have to job search on the regular and it can be incredibly exhausting. It's hard work. The hustle isn't glamorous in the slightest. In fact most days it can feel incredibly beggy.

Why I hate the term mum boss.

Not only does the term mum boss make me want to be a little bit sick in my mouth, it brings a certain level of expectation (and falseness) to a mothers life. An added expectation and pressure that we most definitely don't need in our lives.

Calling people like myself a boss mum makes it feel like we're winning at life. Like we're nailing the work life balance. When in reality it's usually so far from the truth. We're all just trying our damned best to keep our heads above water.

To the mothers who don't feel like bad ass mum bosses. I am you. We are all you.

The hustle thing is just... Exhausting. People are looked down on for wanting to read or just ~be~ without making every moment productive.
You definitely don't need that pressure, just keep doing what's best for you.

It's not easy, but I admire your determination and strong personality. Do you search for jobs to have side hustles with blogging?

I HEAR YOU I SEE YOU I RELATE TO YOU. lol.

Being a full-time blog around your children is both a blessing and a curse. Of course, we do it because the reward is priceless - time with our babies. But it is tiring. The lack of time to do as much as you want can be so frustrating. I feel so behind at the moment. It's 3pm and Leo is asleep and I know I need to wake him up really buttttttt I'm getting stuff done. It's going to be a late bed time tonight!

For similar reasons I don't really like the term 'girl boss'. There's definitely an expectation that we should all be 'bossing' life and that if we're not we're somehow a failure, but mainly people who come across as a 'girl boss' or 'mum boss' only appear so online, I'm sure behind the scenes we all feel like we're not bossing it at all!

I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. I feel the part about blogging being hard work with long hours PLUS having kids on top of that? I don't have kids yet but imagine this to be soo exhausting at times. Wishing you all the best <3

I'm not a mother myself but I hate the term girl boss. It's just a label I would never want to associate myself with! x

I FEEL You dear completely. It's like you writing my words. Blogging with kids is really too much. I have a teen and a toddler. Teen is self sufficient to do his stuff but there are other stress relating to him. Toddler needs me full time. So there your work hours are gone. I also sit till wee hours of morning just to finish off a blog in time. And then the time of promoting your blog on social media. Another nightmare. So I Totally get it when you say you don't like the term ' Mum Boss' TBH I am just trying to keep up with responsibilities and my work. There is no semblance of balance..... Far from it.
Lots of love to you ❤

    Love this post!!!!!!!

I probably used this term in the past a few times, not anymore. I totally agree on all points you make. Trying to be superwoman literally caused me to have a mental breakdown.

From now on, I'm all about the reality of motherhood, pictures on social media which convey this and I'm literally blocking the fake images that look like they are out of a picture frame when you buy it! I mean, we're all tired!

I'm lone parenting this week and had a terrible day yesterday. So bad I was drinking coffee late last night when she was still zooming round. We've both napped today (thankfully I can, until I start work next week!) & we are in a better mood.

It's hardwork and I wish more people would openly say this. God knows when I will fit in blogging from next week. Argh! It's nice to have other people you can relate to.

I can understand the struggles so much. Parenting while trying to work from home, building a business of any kind is so challenging. The interruptions I get from my kid, slow down the creative process for me. It's a lot of starting and stopping over and over again. I never thought negatively about the term 'Mom Boss,' or 'Boss Mom,' though. I think that it can be empowering. Even without getting everything right all the time, I still find a level of accomplishment in what I'm doing. Now 'girl boss' I don't like. To me, that's a qualifier that suggests that it's abnormal for a girl to be a boss. Same thing with 'female athlete.'

I haven’t heard of this term before, but I don’t think I would use it. Parenting and working can be really difficult. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I'm not a mom but I do work full time and blog part time so I can understand a bit about the work load and finding time. Terms like mum boos and girl boss are quite deceiving and only makes us feel worse when life is clear cut and balanced. Who came up with these terms away?
