There are plenty of common parenting issues us parents face these days. We're judged on so many things, from temper tantrums to parenting styles - There's a lot! In todays post I'm discussing ten parenting problems and major challenges we face and putting them straight into room 101!

If you're not familiar with Room 101, then firstly you must be young and I am incredibly jealous, but secondly let me tell you… Because otherwise, this post is going to make no sense. Room 101 was a fast-moving chat show (1994-2007) where celebrities had the chance to shelve their worst pet hates. The celebrities would then compete for the host's approval to banish their annoyance to the depths of Room 101 forever. Their grievances were usually quite jovial, humorous and relatable.

I’d actually forgotten all about Room 101 up until recently when I was chatting to Tom from The Doubting Thomas about the series. After feeling all nostalgic and sniggering about what I'd banish, I thought I’d bring Room 101 over to my blog and shove some parenting issues in there.

A parenting book and the 'textbook baby' is one of my parenting issues going into room 101.

10 Parenting issues going into room 101.

1. Mum Guilt.

This one goes without saying, doesn't it! I wish I could I’d banish mum guilt to Room 101 for all of us. Unfortunately however I think it's something we'll never escape from whether our children are toddlers, teenagers, or even have children themselves. There’s nothing more belittling than mum guilt and although I try my very best to give mum guilt the middle finger, I'm not naive about it. I know it's is a parenting issue that's always going to be there. Unless room 101 actually works?

2. Uneven pavements.

I put uneven pavements into room 101 over on Tom's blog and I couldn't not include them here. It’s only when you go out with a pram that you realise just how uneven pavements can be. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve had two crashes! The baby's been flung to one end of the pram and my toddlers face planted the baby. I know you need to have eyes in the back of your head with children, but uneven or unaccessible paths are just something else. As a mum who's always in a rush it's infuriating.

3. Glitter.

I have absolutely no qualms crafting with my daughter. I quite enjoy it in fact. But when she asks to get the glitter out my eyes roll so darn hard. She sees glitter as these amazingly colourful shiny flecks of wonder. Whereas I see glitter as the absolute worst thing in the world to try and tidy up. It's the bane of my life! I challenge you to name something more difficult to clean!

4. Baby bogies.

There is nothing more annoying than baby bogies. You can quite clearly see them, but their dinky little noses are too small they can’t be reached. Small problem, but oh so annoying!

5. ‘Just wait till they’re…’

We’ve all been there, haven’t we? Complaining about our kids only for someone to say ‘just wait till they’re..’ Which completely diminishes your feelings. All aspects of parenting are hard, we just face different challenges at different ages. I’d quite happily banish the ‘just wait till they’re’ phrase if I could.

6. The textbook baby.

There’s no such thing as textbook babies. Nor is there such thing as a ‘good baby’ or a ‘bad baby’. These terms are unnecessary and most definitely need to go into Room 101. The only thing they do is make parents feel bad that their babies aren’t doing what the textbooks say they’re supposed to be doing. The parenting tips you find in these books can be incredibly overwhelming too. Especially if your baby isn't playing ball.

7. The comparison game.

This is a hard one! It’s only natural to compare your child with other children and can start right from the beginning of even getting pregnant. Staying in our own parenting lanes is imperative for our own mental health. Although I totally understand this is easier said than done.

8. Being fun all the time.

Gosh, how annoying is it being fun all the time? I know it’s a bit naughty, but sometimes I really can’t be bothered to play with my toddler. Being 'on' all of the time is a really common parenting issue. Being on high alert all day isn't a great state to be in. I’d love to be able to just switch off and be replaced by someone more fun.

9. Annoying toys.

There is nothing more infuriating than those brightly coloured plastic toys which light up and sing the same songs on repeat. You know the ones that your kids love! Typical isn’t it! And they only usually want to play with them when you’ve got a headache or you’ve had a testing day.

10. Baggage.

Want to spend a night away with your little one? Want to leave the house with your little one? Let’s consider the amount of baggage they come with… And then decide whether it’s actually worth leaving the house. If only Mary Poppins' bags we're real!

Do you remember room 101? Tell me something you'd put in there.

Great post! I loved Thomas's Room 101 posts. I'm not a Mum but Mum guilt even annoys ME. It's outrageous, how judgmental some Mum's are!

I am not young but I didn’t know about Room 101. But now I know what it is, it makes sense. I have heard of mum guilt which is horrible and other judgemental mums can be so horrible. Thank you for sharing.

Haha I love this post, it definitely gave me a chuckle. I would probably put glitter in room 101 just in general!

Glitter! I HATE glitter. It is evil and disgusting and a menace. Not just to the environment but to my home! Hate the stuff. Large boy was born 3 weeks before Christmas and there was glitter everywhere. I remember him being 6 weeks old and finding it in his hair still and therefore also in my bra. Horrific stuff.

Yes yes yes to uneven pavements! And cars that park on the pavement so you can't get past with the pram!

I hate toys that make noise ugh. One thing that I would add is "Baby Shark." My preschooler was obsessed with it and would get mad at our Amazon Alexa when she wouldn't play it. This article made me smile.

I think mine is the overtired monsters that won't sleep! They're desperate to sleep, crying because they're tired but still can't get there! Frustrating for all

Oooh the comparison thing is really annoying! I feel like everyone plays the comparison game and it's unneccessary!
