Before becoming pregnant myself, I’ll openly admit that I never truly understood or appreciated everything pregnant women go through. Of course, I knew pregnancy was a huge life change. I knew a baby was growing, a body was adapting, and that there were plenty of physical challenges along the way. But knowing something and experiencing it are two completely different things.

Pregnancy has given me a completely new appreciation for pregnant women and the incredible strength, resilience and patience that comes with growing a baby.

It’s easy to focus on the excitement of a new arrival, the cute clothes, the nursery planning and the milestones. But behind all of that is a woman’s body doing something truly remarkable... Often while navigating discomfort, uncertainty, emotions and a huge amount of change.

These are some of the pregnancy lessons that have changed the way I view and appreciate the incredible women who go through this journey.

The Incredible Strength of Pregnant Women

The Strength Of The Pregnant Body Is Incredible

One of the biggest things pregnancy has taught me is just how powerful the female body is. During pregnancy, your body completely changes to support new life. It grows, stretches, adapts and works around the clock to nurture your baby.

Things that once felt normal can suddenly become challenging. Getting comfortable at night, walking for longer periods, finding clothes that fit, dealing with aches and pains (all while continuing with everyday life) can be much harder than people realise.

And yet pregnant women often continue working, caring for others, maintaining relationships and simply getting on with life while their bodies are going through something enormous.

The human body is honestly incredible.

Growing a baby is not easy, and I think pregnant women deserve so much more appreciation for what their bodies are capable of.

Pregnancy Is More Than Just A Physical Journey

Before experiencing pregnancy myself, I think I underestimated the emotional side of it too. Pregnancy comes with so many feelings all at once. There is excitement, love and anticipation, but there can also be worry, uncertainty and moments where you don’t quite recognise yourself.

Your body changes before your mind has had time to catch up.

You can feel grateful and overwhelmed. Excited and nervous. Happy and emotional. Sometimes all in the same hour.

Pregnancy is a huge transition, and I think pregnant women deserve more understanding during this time. It’s not just about carrying a baby. It’s about adapting to a completely new version of yourself.

Pregnant Women Deserve Support, Not Judgement

Something else pregnancy has taught me is how much unnecessary judgement women can face. People comment on bump sizes, weight gain, what you eat, how you look and what choices you make. Often these comments are made casually, without realising the impact they can have. Pregnancy already comes with enough changes and emotions without women feeling like they have to justify their choices or appearance.

Every pregnancy is different.

Every body is different.

Every woman’s experience is different.

Instead of commenting on how someone looks during pregnancy, I think we should celebrate what they are doing. Behind every bump is a woman experiencing something completely unique.

Learning To Appreciate Pregnancy Changes

One of the biggest adjustments during pregnancy is learning to accept a changing body. Your body can feel unfamiliar. Clothes fit differently. Your shape changes. Things you once felt confident wearing may no longer feel comfortable. But those changes represent something incredible.

A growing bump isn’t something to hide. Pregnancy scars and changes aren’t imperfections. They are reminders of what your body has achieved.

I know confidence during pregnancy can be complicated, especially when society often places so much pressure on women to look a certain way. But pregnant bodies deserve appreciation too.

A pregnant woman’s body is not something to judge. It's something to admire.

Pregnancy Has Taught Me A New Level Of Respect For Women

The biggest lesson pregnancy has taught me is simple: pregnant women are amazing!

The strength it takes to grow a baby, the patience needed to navigate the changes, and the emotional journey that comes with becoming a mother are all things I now appreciate so much more.

Pregnancy is not always glamorous. It is not always easy. It can be uncomfortable, exhausting and overwhelming.

But it is also powerful, incredible and life-changing.

To every pregnant woman, whether you are enjoying every moment or finding things difficult, I hope you know how amazing your body is and how much appreciation you deserve.

Growing a baby is one of the most incredible things a person can experience, and it’s something that deserves to be celebrated.

Things I've Learnt Since Being Pregnant

Pregnancy has taught me so much over the last nine months. Not just about babies and birth, but about myself, my body, my relationships and the life I’ve created before stepping into this new chapter.

Looking back, I think one of the biggest things pregnancy has given me is a new appreciation for the little things — and a much deeper understanding of just how much change comes with becoming a mum.

Your Relationship Changes During Pregnancy

One of the most unexpected but beautiful parts of pregnancy has been seeing the way my relationship with Dan has grown and changed. Watching him get excited about becoming a dad has honestly been one of the most heartwarming things. I feel incredibly lucky to have had someone so supportive beside me throughout this journey. Pregnancy isn’t always easy. There have been moments where I’ve struggled with my changing body and haven’t always felt like myself. Learning to adjust to a new shape, new emotions and a completely different version of myself has been challenging at times. But having someone look at you on the days when you don’t feel your best and remind you that you’re beautiful, that you’re already an amazing mum, is something really special. It’s made me realise how important support and encouragement are during pregnancy. Behind every pregnant woman is a person going through huge physical and emotional changes, and having someone there to remind you of your strength can mean everything.

You Never Stop Learning During Pregnancy

Every day really is a school day when you’re pregnant! Over the last nine months, I’ve learnt so much about my body, about babies, about motherhood and even about myself. Just when you think you’ve absorbed everything you need to know, something new comes along and gives you another little lightbulb moment. One of the most random but fascinating things I’ve learnt is just how tiny a newborn baby’s stomach is when they’re first born. We learnt that a baby’s tummy is around the size of a small marble in those first few days, which helps explain why they only need such tiny amounts of milk at a time. It sounds like such a small detail, but moments like that have made me realise just how incredible the whole process is. There is so much happening behind the scenes that we don’t even think about.

Appreciating The Life You’ve Already Lived

Another thing pregnancy has taught me is the importance of appreciating the life you’ve already created. Dan and I have been together for eight years, and we often find ourselves looking back at everything we’ve experienced together. The adventures, the memories, the challenges we’ve overcome and all the moments that have shaped us into who we are today. We’ve genuinely had such an amazing life together as a couple, and becoming parents feels like the next exciting chapter in a story we’ve already loved creating. I think pregnancy gives you a chance to reflect on where you’ve been, while also feeling excited for everything that’s still to come.

Ready For The Next Chapter

My body has done something incredible over these past 273 days, and I have a completely new appreciation for what pregnant women go through. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m so grateful for everything my body has done to grow this little baby. Now, I’m more than ready to meet her and begin the next chapter of our lives.

Pregnancy has been a journey of change, learning and appreciation. And I cannot wait to see where motherhood takes us next.

Great post Claire and lots to relate to! Our bodies really are amazing - it's crazy what they can do, especially grow a tiny human being!
I hate that people feel they can be so judgmental - it's up to a couple if or when they decide they want to have children and some people's journey to getting pregnant is longer than others. People should mind their own business and just be happy for you!
I think for me personally, because I feel like I basically wasted a decade of my life with the wrong person and truly felt that having my own family was never going to be an option, when I finally met the right person I just knew exactly what I wanted, we were both on the same wavelength and everything has just fallen into place at a natural pace for us. It's such an exciting time!
I definitely agree with you RE maternity clothes - unless you're willing to splurge on speciality maternity brands, there really isn't much choice.
I feel so lucky to also have a very supportive partner in all of this, as well as support from both of our families which I know will continue after baby is born. 🙂

Thank you 🙂 It's the most amazing, yet most bizarre thing isn't it. You said it absolutely perfectly, it took us a number of years to get pregnant, however now we are, it feels like the perfect time. Everything seems to have fallen into place for us which is amazing. And the same for you! I'm so glad we're both going through this together. I can't wait to read more of your pregnancy posts. X

    Lovely post Claire.
Pregnancy is a crazy time and thing. As you say, you learn so much about yourself, your body and also your unborn child. Plus everything around you that changes.
Plus, if you think pregnancy has been a whirlwind, wait until she arrives! Haha!
Sadly, parent or not, everyone tom dick, sheila and 'professionals' will have an opinion on you, you and your husband, and your parenting. My piece of advice would be to take the information, but don't pin your life on it. It's funny, maternal instinct, but you do get it and it is generally right. Get yourself some mummy friends and work it out and lean on each other. xx
