The History Of Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park

Flatts Lane Country Park has a rich history that dates back centuries. The site has a long industrial past which includes ironstone mining, brickworks and a railway connecting the old Normanby brickworks to the Guisborough and beyond. This was transformed into its current usage as a recreational area in 1994 however there are still elements of its history that is visible today. Some of the old cobbles are still visible in places as is the old railway station which lies at the end of the lower track through the woodlands. Incidentally, “Flatts” in the name of Flatts Lane refers to blocks of arable land and not, as it often thought, to any ownership by a person by the surname “Flatt”.

Flatts Lane Country Park is one of those places that offers something for everyone! The combination of woodland walks, open green spaces and family friendly facilities makes it a great option for a quick afternoon outdoors or a longer day exploring.

As soon as you park up, you're surrounded by woodland trails and wildlife. It's easy to forget you're still in Teesside.

How To Get To Flatts Lane Country Park

Parking is really convenient at the woodlands. There's a main car park close to the visitors centre and an overflow area just before. You can't miss the ample amount of parking at Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park. I've been on numerous occasions at various times though the day and have never struggled to get a space.

Family Focused Things To Do At Flatts Lane Country Park

The Playground at Flatts Lane Country Park

A massive highlight for families is the adventure playground located just nect to the visitor centre. In 2025 the park went through a massive transformation, and whilst it was lovely before, it's brilliant now! And spoiler alert, there's talks of expanding on this even more with a gym style play set up just up the hill.

The new play area offers plenty of opportunities for children to climb, balance, slide and explore. It's suitable for a range of ages and provides a great place for little ones to play before or after a walk. Attractions you can find currently within the playground include:

• Accessible swing
• Baby/toddler swing
• Play house

If you're visiting with children, this alone can easily fill an hour or more of your visit. Parents can unwind on nearby benches while keeping a watchful eye on their children at play.

Just up from the visitor centre you'll find a nature trail which is perfect for small people. Especially as you don't have to cover that much ground to complete it. The trail consists of a series of large scale wooden woodland animals. You can expect badgers, dragonflies, owls and more!

Interactive Trail

Last year an interactive trail was introduced to Flatts Lane Country Park. It's only a short trail, that follows a similar path to the aforementioned woodland trail. Only with this one you download an app and scan the QR codes at each point. By doing so you're introduced to a variety of animals (with a variety of accents, might I add) who'll tell you all about themselves, their habitats, what they like to eat and more. My seven year old and four year old found this particularly engaging as all the woodland animals were super chatty and super fun. The interactive trail is a lovely little add-on to your woodland adventure.

Walking Trails At Flatts Lane Country Park

One of the best things about Flatts Lane Country Park is the variety of walking routes available. Whether you're visiting with young children, walking the dog, or looking for a longer hike with panoramic views, there are plenty of options to choose from.

The country park sits at the foot of the Eston Hills, making it an excellent starting point for both gentle woodland strolls and more challenging countryside walks.

Along the way you'll experience woodland paths, open moorland and sweeping views across Teesside and the surrounding countryside. Some sections can be muddy and uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Park Run

Flatts Lane Visitor Centre is also home to the Park Run on a Saturday morning. With a 9am start it's the perfect opportunity for fitness enthusiasts and families to get together to run, jog or walk the 5K route throughout the woodlands. It's quite a small run, with only on average 50 participants, but it offers a real community camaraderie to spur you on to move your body on a weekly basis.

Bike Trails

In the inner woodland area you'll find trails upon trails that are just asking to be ridden. My husband is a complete bike head and regularly takes his mountain bike up there to enjoy the speed and the woodland surroundings. It's the perfect place for either spending an hour tearing it up or equally it's a great base for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors or Eston Nab and Lackenby Woods.

Wildlife and Nature

One of the biggest attractions of Flatts Lane Country Park is its rich wildlife. Throughout the year you may spot:

Where To Eat

You can pick up light bites and coffees at the visitors centre, however I would recommend traveling further afield if you're looking to make a day of things. With that being said I'd absolutely recommend popping in and grabbing a coffee to take on your walk with you. You can find great coffee in the most random of places and Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park is one of them!

For your convenience there are well maintained toilets within the visitors centre. They're clean and accessible which is all you can ask for when visiting somewhere like this.

Accessibility

Like with most rural outdoorsy attractions accessibility isn't at the forefront unfortunately. I manage to get around easy enough with our Out'N'About pram as its designed for terrain like this. However anyone with a more standard pram, or those in wheelchairs for example would struggle.

I'd recommend taking the track along the bottom of the woodlands as this is much easier to navigate accessibility wise. It's a flat track with a pond at the end. You'll know when to turn back as you'll be greeted by Godfalter Hill, an incredibly steep incline which explores more of the country park.

Like with any outdoorsy days out it's best to be prepared. The tracks are well maintained however in colder months it's definitely wise to get wrapped up. Walking boots or country boots are a must! Please don't visit the woodlands in your best white trainers. Been there, done that, it's 100% not worth it! I've recently been trialing the Laurel coat from Lighthouse clothing which is the perfect mix of style and substance. The Laurel coat is a puffer style laden with recycled fill for a cosy warm feel on chilly days. It's light and not bulky in the slightest meaning it's the perfect coat for taking on dog walks or exploring woodlands like these.
