George Hotel Northumberland: An affordable picturesque getaway

A few weekends ago I did what any burnt out mother would do and clocked out of parenting for an overnight stay in Northumberland. My husband was of course on hand to look after the kids. But when I say I needed a break, I needed a break! And George Hotel Northumberland was the perfect (and affordable) place to do just that.

Location

George Hotel Northumberland is situated in the small village of Chollerford. Sitting on Chollerford bridge you'll take in views of the north tyne river and surrounding countryside.

Hadrians wall is close by with most tourist sites a short drive away. I'd recommend either vindalonda or Housesteads to fully immerse yourself in the areas history. If you're looking for something closer however, Chesters roman fort museum is only a ten minute walk away from the hotel.

I'm big on walks in the UK, embracing mother nature (in this case, snow) and filling my lungs with fresh air. In my eyes, Northumberland is the perfect place to travel to fo this. The location of George Hotel Northumberland is what really sold the hotel for me. It's perfect for those who like the outdoors, especially walkers enjoying the rambles of Hadrian's Wall. I'll be heading back to Hadrians wall with my husband and I can't think of a better base than the George hotel.

Accommodation

The hotel boasts 47 rooms each featuring neutral decoration, suitable amenities and comfort for walkers tired feet! Guests can choose between single, double, deluxe rooms our suites.

My sister and I had a double room on the ground floor overlooking the pretty north tyne river. Our cup of tea spot within the room was perfect! The room was clean, elemental and comfortable. I'll be honest and say it's not a hugely luxurious hotel, but it's more than adequate and I'm sure will meet a lot of peoples needs.

Amenities

Each room is equipped with flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, and complimentary toiletries. The hotel has everything you would need for a comfortable, home from home stay.

There is also a leisure facility within the hotel. It wasn't actually too far from our room. We didn't venture that far however you'll find a leisure pool and gym there.

Dining

We ate in the restaurant on the evening, indulging in (a very rare for me) three course meal. The restaurant is spacious with views overlooking the river and gardens. It's a lovely space which feels private, yet communal at the same time. Maybe thats part of being in the north though.

The evening meal was perfect. Everything we could ask for after a long day of walking. I had duck pate for starter which came with a fig jam and salad. I've not had fig before, but it was the perfect accompaniment. For main course we both had the gammon dinner which was served with fresh veg, roast potatoes and the most delicious gravy. And for dessert I had apple pie. Which I didn't take photos of because it was drowning in custard. You could barely see the pie for the amount of custard served with it. The perfect dessert if you ask me!

Breakfast the next morning was a help yourself, buffet style affair. Ideal if you're like me and would choose for your plate to be 50% hash browns! You have options of fruits, pastries and of course a full english breakfast. And coffee. Copious amounts of coffee! Breakfast was pleasant and definitely filled the gap ready for another day of walking.

Service

From start to finish the service we received at the George hotel Northumberland was amazing. It's true what they say about people up north! There was a particular lady who (unfortunately for her) worked the evening dinner service as well as breakfast. She called us 'lasses' and chatted to my sister and I as if we were pals who she'd known for years. Her friendly face and attitude made our stay so enjoyable.

Value for money

What I loved most about the George hotel Northumberland is its value for money. We booked an incredible deal through groupon meaning we enjoyed an overnight stay, three course evening meal and breakfast the next day for £110. Split between the two of us meant I paid £55 for a fabulous night away.

I can't quite get over the incredible deal we bagged. We had an excellent stay at the George hotel and the fact we paid so little for it makes it even better!
