Decisions on things as small as what we eat and how long we spend on our phones can all impact our health. For children that are still developing and attending school, it’s important that a close eye is kept and that healthy routines are maintained. We have teamed up with a boarding school in Dublin to share more on the ways in which lifestyle choices can affect a child’s education.

My child's lifestyle choices
Diet
A healthy balanced diet is essential for good overall health, mood, and productivity. If your child's diet consists of foods that are high in sugar, they may experience an initial energy high before a crash where their mood and energy drops significantly and they feel lethargic. To help prevent this from happening so that they feel energised throughout the day, make sure that your child has plenty of water and a balanced diet with some treats only.
Exercise
Exercise is one that children are getting less and less of everyday as devices and technology keep us indoors. It plays a huge role in how we feel as it releases endorphins and gives us the opportunity to get fresh air. Not only are these factors good for overall health and wellbeing but they can help your child perform better by helping them feel more positive and happier within themselves.
Sleep
The amount of sleep that your child gets a night will determine how ready they are to learn and how engaged they are in class. Mood is something else that sleep can affect. Generally, we’re crankier when we get less sleep, tired and less willing to participate in things.
Screen Time
Screen time is one that should also be on the radar. Children love a device, and it can be hard for parents to take them away. Too much screen time isn’t good for the eyes and can impact a child’s mental health as their understanding of reality is distorted.

I have a few friends that are parents and I know that they limit their screen time so they can enjoy being outside and just learning in the outside world! x

The device thing worries me so much with Leo. It's hard to know what to do for the best as I want him to embrace technology without being addicted!

My little brother always loves to use the phone. And I agree, it's difficult. But we had to create a plan to help control it.
Screen time has become a big thing for younger children, it is important not to allow too much. These are some really good points to consider. Thank you for sharing.

Exercise is something I'd really like to encourage our child to do, plus just being outside in general!

Controlling childrens diets is so hard in my opinion, especially when young as they can be so fussy! Ru won't touch any veggies so I have to hide them in meals!
