Luke Jerram's Museum of the Moon comes to 20-21.

AD. On the 19th May the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. It's opening with an exciting programme of exhibitions as well as events to mark the special occasion. One of which is Luke Jerram's Museum of the Moon: A large scale illumination replica of the moon.

The Museum of the Moon exhibition.

Museum of the Moon is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. It's one of Luke's most successful projects which has been presented in various different ways in over 30 different countries.

The exhibition has been experienced by more than 10 million people worldwide. Now it's time for the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire & the surrounding areas to have their turn to view this installation of epic proportions.

The exhibition will be opening from Monday 17th May. Visiting slots will be available to book free of charge from 20-21.

Who is Luke Jerram?

Although UK based now Luke Jerram has worked internationally for the last 24 years. He has created extraordinary art projects which have equally excited and inspired people around the world. In 2019 alone, he had 117 exhibitions in 22 different countries around the world.

He's described by Bloomberg Television as 'probably the most famous artist you've never heard of'.

What is the Museum of the Moon?

The moon measures six meters in diameter and features a covering of detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:600,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 6km of the moon’s surface.

The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery and moonlight as well as surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones.

Over its lifetime, the Museum of the Moon has been presented in a number of different locations, both indoor & outdoor. As it travels from place to place it gathers new experiences, musical compositions and likewise an ongoing collection of personal responses.

My Husband & I were lucky enough to see the Museum of the Moon a couple of years ago during Leeds Light Night. I can assure you, it's one not to be missed!

From 17th May to 5th June, visitors can admire the stunning moon sculpture which will hang within the atmospheric setting. Visiting slots will be available to book free of charge from 20-21.

About the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre.

20-21 Visual Arts Centre is an art gallery located in Church Square, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

Since the gallery’s doors first opened in 2001, it has developed a reputation for offering a varied and exciting exhibition programme of contemporary art.  It shows around 20 exhibitions per year, across six different exhibition spaces, all of which are ambitious and creatively diverse. As well as bringing culture to the local community, it also exhibits art by groups that are traditionally under-represented in mainstream galleries.

20-21 presents a mix of in-house curated exhibitions, touring shows and exhibitions developed in partnership with fellow creative organisations.  It also produces and delivers its own touring exhibitions to other galleries nationally.

Reopening of 20-21.

The coronavirus pandemic has disastrously impacted the arts and entertainment sector. Along with all galleries the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre has had it really tough as of late, but now is our opportunity to change that. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that we really need to get behind galleries reopening. Michelle Lally, the Creative Arts Manager of 20-21 feels exactly the same, she said:

“We are extremely proud of our significant history and heritage as a leading contemporary arts venue in North Lincolnshire. We’re really looking forward to inviting people back to see the wonderful array of exhibitions that we have planned. We have been busy preparing and, subject to government announcements, we will be ready to reopen on 17 May to begin our 20^th anniversary celebrations'.

Museum of the Moon events.

There are various lunar inspired events happening within the Museum of the Moon exhibition.

• Pilates under the moon: 23rd May 10am-12pm
• Yoga under the moon: 23rd May 1pm-3pm
• Picnic under the moon: 29th May 7pm-9pm

I don't know of any other art galleries doing events within their exhibitions so these excite me very much. The pilates event sounds totally up my street. I mean, just imagine how serene it'd be in exercising under such a magnificent installation.
