Top tips for helping your child learn a new language.

There are lots of advantages when it comes to learning a new language. In particular when it comes to one’s cognitive abilities, problem-solving skills, and confidence. What’s more, being able to speak more than one language provides a person with opportunities that a monolingual person might not experience, such as career or travel prospects. Learn together.

If you’re up for the challenge, why don’t you learn a new language alongside your child? As a result, you will be in a better position to help them as you can practise together. Having someone to practise simple words and phrases with will make the learning process far easier than studying them alone. If you don’t have time to learn a new language, you could help your child by holding up flash cards for them, with the English version on one side of the card and the foreign translation on the other. 

Label everything.

One great way to help your child with their vocabulary is to label items around your house, from the fridge to the front door. Frequent exposure will help them remember the words so that they can eventually include them in phrases and conversations. What’s more, it will allow them to visualise the word.

Practise little and often.

When it comes to learning a new language, practising frequently in short bursts is far better than hour long study sessions once a week. By the time the next week rolls around, your child will probably have forgotten much of what they learnt the week before. Practising for 15 minutes each afternoon will make it easier for them to retain the information. 

Use technology.

There are lots of apps and online games that are programmed to help individuals learn a second language. Have a look into some of these, especially if your child has their own smartphone. That way, they can tap into the app next time they’re sat waiting for the bus or in the waiting room of a doctor’s surgery.
