How to have a stress free move

Whether you’re moving into an older property or opting for modern living with a top-spec new build house, you can reduce the stress and anxiety of relocating by following some simple steps. Here are our 5 top tips for a stress-free move.

1. Organisation is key

Often the most tedious part of moving house is getting everything organised. Having a detailed plan of a timeframe can help make sure everything is moving along as it needs to be, and you can avoid leaving everything to the last minute.

Write yourself a packing checklist so it’s clear what you’re bringing with you and what is left to do before moving day. This will prevent interruptions and any headaches that could potentially arise down the road.

2. Declutter before you pack

You can make things easier for yourself by sorting through your belongings before you pack. There is no point bringing broken or unused items with you into your new home so save yourself time and energy by throwing them out before you move in.

If you have items that are still fit for purpose but will just take up valuable space, you can limit waste by donating them to charity shops or selling them on online marketplaces like Depop or Vinted.

3. Gather your supplies

Boxes, bags, markers and tape rollers are just a few of the packing supplies you will need to get everything stored securely. This is essential to keeping your belongings and organised and safe during transportation.

Using a labelling system will make unpacking easier. Packing room-by-room and marking their destination and contents will prevent you from being unable to identify what is inside your boxes when they make it to your new property.

4. Pack a survival box

It’s unlikely that you’re going to be able to unpack all your boxes in one day, so making yourself a survival box to tide you over is a good idea. You don’t want to be left rummaging through your boxes looking for teabags, bed linen or body wash.

Other essentials to include on your packing checklist include toilet rolls, toothpaste and toothbrushes, bottled water and lots of snacks.

5. Ask for help

Sometimes it isn’t feasible to transport your belongings yourself, so put your trust in the professionals. Removal companies are incredibly convenient if you can afford them, but you could also enlist the help of your friends and family.
