AD. Spring has sprung and now is the perfect time to try and restore a bit of order to your home. Spring cleaning can feel like a daunting task, especially when it comes to the kids rooms, but a deep clean and declutter will help both you and the room itself feel more organised and tidy. I always find that a tidy home means a tidy mind. And currently both of my daughters bedrooms are not giving me a tidy mind! So for you (but mainly me) here are twelve ways to deep clean your kids bedroom.

How to deep clean your kids bedroom

Donate or dispose of any old toys

The easiest way to make the biggest impact in your child's bedroom is to organise their toy collection. It's handy to make three piles: Keep, donate and dispose. My kids have amassed a ridiculous amount of toys in their short little lives. We regularly donate to try and teach the girls the value of giving back and helping those who aren't as privileged as my two are.

Donate or dispose of any old clothes

Similar to the previous point, going through your child's wardrobe and purging anything that's not worn anymore or that no longer fits will make a massive dent in deep cleaning their bedroom. This helps create more space in their closet and makes it easier to find the clothes they actually wear. It's also worth thinking about the seasons at this point too. It might be handy being more ruthless when it comes to winter clothes seeing as (hopefully) we'll have some warmer weather on the horizon.

Organise your child's wardrobe

Once you've eradicated your child's wardrobe of anything they don't wear, it's then time to put it all back together... In an organised manner! You could use space saving hangers perhaps or organisers to maximise the space. Not only does this make it easier when choosing what clothes to wear on a morning, but it also makes it easier when putting clothes away after being washed. I put away two baskets of laundry earlier, and no word of a lie it took me close to half an hour! That's half an hour not well spent to me. Thirty minutes where I could have been enjoying a chocolate spread sandwich.

Clean under the bed

I daren’t look under the beds in our house. But in the name of Spring cleaning, you (and I) should remove any items from under the bed before going in with the hoover. It’s a bit of a black hole down there—rife with dust, old hair bobbles, and tiny missing toy parts you thought disappeared forever.

The mess can also attract pests and other nasties. In more serious cases, you might even need to call in professionals like Aptive Florida, or a reputable pest control service local to your area.

But for general prevention and peace of mind, especially if you spot the early signs of creepy crawlies, visit ThermoPest to find out how to deal with the issue quickly and efficiently. They offer family-friendly treatments that can help you maintain a clean, safe environment without harsh chemicals.

It’s a horrible job, but once done it can really improve the air quality and overall cleanliness of the room.

Clean surfaces

Simply wiping down and cleaning surfaces such as drawers and the bed frame can have a massive impact on your child's bedroom. Regularly keeping on top of surfaces helps incredibly when you deep clean your kids bedroom. Polishing surfaces removes dust and debris that accumulates over time.

Floors

Whilst you might hoover or sweep the floors regularly, now is the time to go in with a steam mop or carpet shampoo. I've just bought a Russel Hobbs steam mop so it's at the forefront of my mind. And as someone who doesn't enjoy cleaning too much, it's actually pretty fun.

Declutter books

If your children are anything like mine they'll have a libraries worth of books in their bedrooms. I say this like it's a whinge, but I really don't mind the books in the house. I'd much rather books than bulky plastic toys. During your deep clean it's worthwhile making a keep pile and one to donate. Books can be donated to your local library or charity shop. I take mine into my daughters school as they're always on the look out for new books.

Skirting boards

Nows the time to get down on your hands and knees and give the skirting boards a good clean. I couldn't tell you the last time they were done in my daughters bedrooms so I'll be taking my own advice in the coming week. I bet they're every bit as dusty as I can imagine.

Boil wash bedding

Bedding should be washed regularly, but here's your Spring cleaning reminder to pop it on the hottest wash possible. Hot/warm water temperatures kill germs and takes care of dust mites that can thrive in bedding. If you can as well, it's worthwhile air drying them in the summer sunshine. There's somethings about fresh air dried laundry which hits differently.

Organise school supplies

Gather all school supplies and organise them into categories like pencils, papers, and books. These can then be distributed into appropriate furniture or storage solutions. I'd recommend clear organisers to keep these items tidy and easy to access. It's nice for the children to have access to them, but it's just as nice to be able to put them away also.

Don’t Forget Air Purification Systems

A clean room isn't just about surfaces—air quality matters too. Use or install an air purifier to reduce allergens, dust, and airborne pollutants that can linger even after cleaning. Regularly replace filters in HVAC units or standalone purifiers to ensure they’re working effectively and helping your child breathe easier.

Clean the windows and blinds

Similar to under the bed, the window area is something that often gets forgotten about in our house. Use a window cleaner and dry muslin cloth to clean the windows and a damp cloth to wipe down the blinds. This helps improve the appearance of the room and lets more natural light in. You'll be surprised (and quite possibly horrified) at the difference a spring clean can make to your blinds. Mine gather dust like it's going out of fashion!

Evaluate furniture

Consider whether any furniture in the room is no longer needed. Perhaps it's time to upgrade to a more functional piece. Or completely get rid of? This helps create more space in the room and ensures that the furniture is serving a useful purpose. Depending on the size of furniture too it can have a huge visual impact on the interior design of the room: Something I'm sure your kids will love.

With these 12 tips, you can deep clean your kids bedroom with confidence. Not only will it make the space more functional and organised, but it can also have a positive impact on both theirs and your mental health. Happy spring cleaning!

Which one of these deep cleaning jobs do you need to do? What are you dreading or putting off?
