5 Best newborn buys!

When you’re expecting a baby, the amount of stuff you ‘need’ to buy is overwhelming - from sleep suits, to fancy travel systems. I have two daughters, a three year old and a 5 month old and have spent a lot of time researching the best newborn buys so that my house isn’t filled with items that aren’t worth the money, or space.

So without further ado, here are the 5 products that I highly recommend if you’re having a baby, or if you want to buy an expectant parent a really useful gift.

5 Best newborn buys.

1. Baby Bjorn bouncer.

We bought our Baby Bjorn bouncer second hand on Facebook marketplace when we were expecting our first, and it’s been incredible. We have tried a number of other bouncers and no other compares. There’s just something about the bounce!

In the first few weeks we would mostly use it to allow us to have meals in peace. My husband perfected bouncing it with one leg, whilst eating dinner. The rocking would send both babies off to sleep in minutes. We have even brought it to pubs and restaurants with us so that we could enjoy a meal there!

It folds down flat so is easy to take with you, and the cover washes very easily and isn’t difficult to put back on.

My daughter is 5 months old now and we still use it daily as a place for her to watch us safely from, play with her activity bar or bounce it herself.

2. Large muslins.

Muslins are on of the best newborn buys and it’s a good idea to have a big stash of them... Especially if you have a sicky baby. The extra-large muslins are really useful. As well as mopping up sick and dribble, they are so handy as a breastfeeding cover, a blanket, a play item or even as an impromptu change mat.

You can get some gorgeous designs but I really recommend the Etta Loves black and white XL muslins as they’re also good for supporting babies visual development.

3. Angelcare bath support.

The Angelcare bath support is brilliant as there is no need for a separate baby bath. You simply put it in your own bath and pop baby in the seat. There is no need to awkwardly hold them in the bath as they are fully supported and it means that you have both hands free to wash them or have some fun playing.

The material quickly reaches the bath water temperature so they are nice and comfortable too. You can use it from newborn and we also use it out of the bath as a baby seat as it’s easy to transport around the house.

4. Sleep suits with zips.

Sleep suits with zips make your life SO much easier!.. Especially in the early days when you have to do night-time nappy changes. In the middle of the night, when you’re bleary eyed and desperate to get back to bed you will be so thankful for the zip.

My absolute favourites are the Bonds Wondersuits. They have fold over mittens but also have fold over cuffs on the feet which is brilliant as you can convert it into a footless sleep suit, meaning they last so much longer. They also wash really well and are super soft.

5. Fisher Price rainforest playmat.

Once your baby gets a little older, a playmat - or play gym is so handy for entertaining them. We have this one from Fisher Price and although it’s pretty garish and the music will get stuck in your head, both girls have loved it.

From just laying and taking everything in as tiny babies, to tummy time and starting to play with the toys as they got bigger it’s had a lot of use. This one plays music and you can attach other toys to it too which is great.
