Finding the perfect family home can be tricky. It’s the place where your kids will grow up and you’ll make countless memories. You’ll also want to feel safe here and able to do the types of activities that your family enjoys. To help make your decision that bit easier, we’ve come up with three key features to consider when purchasing your next family home.

How to find the perfect family home

Location

Probably the most important factor when choosing a family home is the location. Whether you’re just looking for a new home in the same area or are looking to move somewhere completely new, what’s around you matters.

You’ll want to find out where local amenities are located, such as supermarkets, schools, and medical facilities - and if there are enough of these. If you don’t own a car or plan to use public transport, check to see if there are local bus stops, train stations, and cycle routes.

Once your children grow up and start to become more independent, access to these facilities is important.

Safety of surroundings

Your children should always come first, especially when asking them to move away from what they know to be their home. Safety is paramount and this backs on to our previous point on location.

Purchasing a property that is close to a main road isn’t a great idea, especially if your children are at an age where they want to play outside or meet their friends. You also want to steer clear of areas that are known for having a high crime rate.

Look for a friendly neighbourhood with plenty of families with kids that are a similar age. New build property developments are a great choice due to having large communities of like-minded individuals. These also tend to be located close to local amenities and green spaces.

Type of property

Before searching the market for your dream home, establish what it is you are looking for. This will depend on the number of children you have and if you anticipate growing your family in the future. If you have the one child, a two-bedroom house would suffice – any more would require three bedrooms or more.

It’s also worth noting the number of bathrooms you’d like. A large family sharing a single bathroom isn’t ideal for those mornings when you’re trying to get everyone to school. You could instead invest in a property with the potential for growth and make adjustments as and when needed.

While a garden isn’t always a necessity, it is a great feature to have in a family home. Picture the kids running around and playing in the garden or having friends over in the summer for a BBQ – it’s something that you wouldn’t want to miss out on. Just be cautious about gardens that have a pond or back out onto busy roads.

The first thing I would do when buying a new home is check the location and see if it's safe for a family, the local amenities and the local schools, great post! x

Next time we move house, I want something that could be extended in the future! I wish we had space to extend in our current house!

Location is a huge part when it comes to a family home where you're going to raise your children. Not only with the surroundings and how close you are to things but also the neighbourhood safety. Always been a focus of mine when I've moved x
