As your child grows up, they will go through many changes, and they may disrupt their
normal routine. Whether that be a change of school or one to their home environment, it can all affect them without you even knowing. To help reduce stress in these sorts of situations, you can use mindfulness. It is a way of “grounding” and restoring focus to the present moment.

We have teamed up with one of the best sixth forms in North London to share ways in which you can explore mindfulness with your child to help them manage their stress levels.

Easy ways to explore mindfulness.

Mindful Walking

Walking can help children to stay fit and healthy while giving them the opportunity to soak up the sun and get fresh air. You can use this as an opportunity to exercise mindfulness together as there is plenty outdoors to stimulate the senses. On your walk, encourage them to think about what they can see, hear, smell and touch. As they do, they will begin to forget about their worries and feel more connected to the world around them.

Mindful Eating

Eating is another activity that stimulates the senses. As you eat, you can focus on what you can taste and break down each flavour profile.

Breathing

Breathing is something that we all do subconsciously in order to live and function. It can be used to lower stress levels as it increases oxygen exchange and lowers one's blood pressure. It also helps with mindfulness when engaged in the moment.

Counting Clouds

The world around us is truly remarkable. You can get lost in a world of your own by looking up at the clouds. This makes them a great distraction. You can use them to help your child feel grounded and engaged in the present moment by getting them to observe and count them.

    These are great tips.

My little one is very sensitive and takes in all her surroundings. Doing things like this with her are vital.

Counting clouds is something we will try this week!

County clouds is such a novel way to get a child to relax - I'm definitely going to try it with my granddaughter. It will get her away from electronic devices and give her a chance to clear her mind.
