Books I've Read in July

Yes, you read that right. On the 17th August I'm finally getting around to writing my monthly book review. The school holidays have definitely been holidaying for the last few weeks, and whilst I'm feeling relatively stress free about it, I've certainly dropped the ball in some areas. My monthly book review being one of them. But here we are, better late than never! Here is the book (only one again for me this month) I read in July.

1. The Split by Sharon J Bolton

Synopsis

On the remote Antarctic island of South Georgia, glaciologist Felicity Lloyd counts the days until the last boat of the summer departs - A lifeline to safety. She came here to hide from Freddie, the man she fears most, recently released from prison after serving time for murder. But she knows he won’t stop until he finds her. Racing against time, he heads to South Georgia, desperate to reach her before Freddie does. And before isolation turns into a deadly trap.

Review

Sharon Bolton is a completely new author to me, but after picking this up in my local charity shop and looking into her a bit more, I knew I was in for a treat. It took me quite a while to get into the book. Although I think this was more to do with me and less to do with the book. Finding the time to read was quite tricky in July. Work was busy, and the end of school year admin was rife! So i found myself quite often picking it up and reading 10-20 pages here and there.

Whilst it took me a little while to get into The Split, as soon as the story started developing, I really got into it! Without giving too much away, the main topic is something I'm really quite interested in. It has a similar vibe to a Tom Holland series that came out a couple of years ago. And I absolutely loved that too! Let's just say the title makes total sense!... Although it might not be what you first think.

I really enjoyed Boltons character development in this one. I found the way the steady drop of information about each character worked perfectly in building suspense and tension. Whilst I found the main character Felicity slightly annoying in parts, I can't deny how good it was peeling back those onion layers and finding out more about her throughout the book.

And the twist! I didn't see the twist coming at all. It was brilliant. But what I will say, is that I kind of wanted a bit more. But again, maybe that's me? Perhaps I've read too many thrillers now. Maybe I'm starting to become a bit immune to the thrills.

All in all though, this was an excellent book! I really enjoyed it once I gave myself the opportunity to get into it.

You'll be pleased to know I've already boxed off two books in August, and am well on my way to getting through a third. So next months book review will definitely be a bit more substantial!
