AD. Renovating our main bedroom has been on the wish list for a while. And I'm so thankful that I can finally say, it's actually happening! In this post, I’ll be sharing the early stages of our journey: the inspiration, planning, and design process behind creating a Pinterest worthy bedroom. From mood boards to sourcing and setting priorities, here’s how we’re turning ideas into a space that feels both beautiful and functional.

Why We're Renovating The Main Bedroom
Our bedroom originally looked like it was stuck in a time warp. Think deep dark mahogany woods, floral wallpaper and cupboards built over the bed. That's what we were dealing with. After a wild 'let's rip everything out, it'll spur us on to decorate' moment two years ago (yes, you heard that right), I think it's about time we started bedroom renovations.
We've been sleeping in a space which I can only describe in derogatory terms for the last couple of years and I for one am absolutely sick of it. Granted, we don't spend very much time in the bedroom, other than sleeping. But I think the overall appearance of the space as it is, is exactly the reason why. When it comes to redesigning the space, I want to change that! I want to create a serene sleeping haven that's both functional, looks appealing and oozes relaxation.

Creating The Vision
Gathering Inspiration from Pinterest
When we set our sights on creating a Pinterest worthy bedroom, Pinterest was the first stop... Of course! I spent quite a long time scrolling and pinning, gradually noticing patterns in the styles I was drawn to. From here I them categorised my boards further into more specific areas such as 'bedroom wall panelling' and 'bedroom built in wardrobes'. Perhaps excessive, but I found this technique to be really beneficial in narrowing down my desired style.
Building the Mood Board
Once I had a feel for the aesthetic, I used Canva to pull my favourite images into a digital mood board. This helped distill the overall vibe: a palette of forest greens, warm neutrals, natural woods, and black and gold accents. The goal was to create a visual reference point, something to keep me grounded and on track during the decision making process.

Gathering Samples
With the mood board in hand, I started collecting fabric swatches, paint samples, and flooring options. Seeing these textures and tones in a real life setting has been a game changer. I'm a very visual person and feel seeing the products in situ helps massively with making decisions. It’s one thing to pin a dream, another to bring it to life!
Planning The Space
Assessing the Room’s Potential
Before diving into design decisions, I took a step back to look at the room as it currently stands. The main bedroom is quite a decent size, with great natural light and a layout that’s functional. There were a few features I knew I wanted to highlight, like the large window and large wardrobe space. I also paid attention to how the light moved through the space during the day. Knowing this is a great guide for paint colour choices and lighting decisions.
Design Goals and Functional Priorities
Aesthetics are important, but the room also needs to functionally work for us. Top priorities included adding more storage (without overcrowding), creating a cosy characterful space, and improving brightness. I also wanted to ensure the space felt peaceful and easy to maintain. With two young children this is quite high on the priority list of things I want to achieve. By balancing design with day-to-day function, the goal is to create a bedroom that not only looks beautiful but supports how we actually live.

Budgeting And Sourcing
The Budget Breakdown
Setting a budget early is essential to avoid design daydream overload. Because that's a trap that's so easy to fall into! When planning our Pinterest worthy bedroom I started with a rough ceiling figure, then divided it into key categories
- Plastering
- Paint and decorating supplies
- Carpeting
- Furniture
- Lighting
- Textiles
- Finishing touches
I also factored in a small contingency pot... Because, as with any renovation, surprise expenses always pop up!
Rather than trying to do everything at once, I prioritised spending on the pieces that would make the biggest impact, like a new bed frame, paint and decorating supplies while saving on smaller decorative items that can be updated later.
Where We’re Shopping
I’m mixing high street staples with a few investment pieces. Places like Bedstar are great for beds, mattresses and bedding. I've also got my eye on some beautiful rattan wardrobes from DUSK, however I'm trying my absolute hardest to find a more budget friendly option. IKEA and H&M Home are great for affordable, stylish homeware. These will be my go to when it comes to textiles and finishing touches. I’m also browsing Facebook Marketplace and local charity shops regularly for more unique finds. I love a bargain! Plus it’s amazing what you can source secondhand with a bit of patience and creativity.

Designing The Dream Action Plan
Timeline and To Do List
With a clear vision and budget in place, I mapped out a rough timeline. The plan includes decluttering and prep work, followed by painting, furniture updates, and finally, styling. Each stage has its own checklist to keep things on track without feeling overwhelming. With that being said, I'm very prepared for things to not exactly go to plan. Life gets in the way sometimes so flexibility is key when it comes to home renovation projects.
DIY or Delegate?
To keep costs down, we’re doing most of the work ourselves. Or the work we can do anyway! I'd like to say it's going to be a fun bonding session, but let's see. We might end up divorced by the end of the renovation. For anything involving electrics or structural, we’ll bring in the pros. It’s all about finding the right balance between time, budget, and skill level.
So, Watch This Space
While the room is still very much a work in progress, laying the groundwork has been an inspiring and rewarding part of the journey. From mood boards to budgeting and planning each step, we’re well on our way to creating a space that feels both personal and polished. I can already see our Pinterest worthy bedroom taking shape. I can’t wait to share the final reveal once it all comes together.

I would love to have a Pinterest-worthy bedroom! These are great ways to plan and design one x
