I really enjoyed how the puzzles were tailored to Family Outings and the trips that they provide. A lot of the answers referenced excursions they provide such as Edinburgh Zoo, Chessington World of Adventures and Flamingo Land. There's also a screen at the front of the bus which played movies throughout our travel. We sat back, relaxed and managed to get through Moana 2, Encanto and Wicked during our journey.

Our Chester Zoo Experience – A Perfect Family Day Out

Setting Off From Middlesbrough

Our day began bright and early in Middlesbrough, where we were greeted with smiles and a welcoming atmosphere from the Family Outings team. From the outset, it was clear this wasn’t just a coach journey. It was the beginning of a fully thought out family adventure.

The coach itself was modern, clean, and perfectly suited for families. Reclining seats gave us plenty of room, and the kids were immediately excited when they were given their activity packs. The latest Moana movie played on the screen, and it wasn't long until we were on our way, coffee in hand, knowing the day ahead would be a blast.

A Day Packed With Adventure

After a smooth and relaxing journey, we arrived at Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s most popular family attractions. Having booked through Family Outings, our entry was already arranged, meaning we skipped the queues and headed straight in to explore the 128-acre zoo. Easy peasy!

Obviously my two headed straight for the face paint station! They were like moths to a flame. There are a few face paint stations dotted around the zoo, however we visited the larger site at the entrance to the zoo. It was quite pricey at £10 per face (with more expensive options available) but you literally can't put a price on your kids happiness. They were pleased as punch with the result! My little flamingo and giraffe.

Animals to See

Chester Zoo although huge is cleverly sectioned into themed habitats, making it easy to explore the world’s wildlife one zone at a time. From Islands, where you can take a boat ride through tropical environments, to Spirit of the Jaguar, Elephants of the Asian Forest, and the rather majestic Realm of the Red Ape. Each area is packed with animals, education, and immersive experiences.

Among the highlights were the incredible Asian elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, and the ever-popular two toed sloth. Which I have to say way my personal highlight of the day. The new for 2025 ‘Heart of Africa’ exhibit is a must-see, with a fantastic walkthrough experience that brings you up close to a rich variety of African species in a carefully recreated savannah ecosystem.

What really added to the experience were the daily animal talks and feeding demonstrations, which are not only informative but often surprisingly interactive. We learned fascinating facts from the keepers. I really enjoyed feeding time with the giant otters and the elephant talk.

Accessibility

Chester Zoo is impressively accessible for visitors with additional needs. The paths are wide and well maintained, making it easy for wheelchairs, buggies, and those with limited mobility to get around. There are free wheelchairs available to hire, as well as numerous accessible toilets dotted throughout the site. For families with young children, buggy hire is available near the entrance, which is a great option for little legs that tire easily. There’s braille signage in some areas, making the zoo welcoming to those with visual impairments. Multiple viewing points at different heights ensure that everyone, regardless of age or ability, can enjoy seeing the animals. You can tell Chester Zoo are really trying hard to advocate for those with additional needs.

Food

We decided to bring our own picnic, and we were glad we did. Not because the food options weren’t appealing (there are plenty of food stalls and cafes, offering everything from pizzas and burgers to healthier options), but because the prices are on the higher side, as is often the case at large attractions. That said, Chester Zoo really shines when it comes to picnic spots. There are loads of picnic areas with benches and grassed spaces where families can rest and refuel. We found a quiet shady spot near the zebras and enjoyed our lunch with a view!

Play Areas

If the animals weren’t enough to tire out the kids, the numerous play areas certainly did the trick. There are well maintained play parks scattered across the zoo, catering to different age groups. From adventurous climbing frames to interactive water play (in warmer months), these give children the chance to let off steam between animal enclosures. One of our favourites was the Wildlife Wood, inspired by wildlife here in the UK. The area blends play with learning in a way that keeps the children entertained while sneaking in a bit of education.

Timings

Before I go into my final thoughts I wanted to toot Family Outings horn a bit more (no pun intended). What I massively appreciated during our day trip from Middlesbrough was the sheer amount of time we had to spend in the zoo. With a departure time of 5.30pm we had a total of six hours to enjoy in the zoo! Although there is an awful lot to see and do at Chester Zoo we in no way felt rushed throughout the day. I really appreciated this as feeling rushed gives me such anxiety!
