[AD] In teaching your child to be independent, it’s important to teach them about how to think for themselves. Critical thinking skills concern our ability to assess and evaluate information. Instead of taking it at face value, children should be taught to think critically about what they’re presented with as it can help them to make better decisions and not be taken advantage of. Here are some ways in which you can work on critical thinking skills with your child.

Weighing Up Pros and Cons

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. There will be positives and negatives for every decision that your child chooses to make and they must learn to look ahead to consider these. While they may not be able to do this straight away, they can with a little guidance. You can start by creating a table of pros and cons and encouraging them to consider different perspectives.

Give Your Child a Chance

While they may be young, it’s important that your child has the opportunity to make decisions for themselves. Nothing crazy but small decisions where they must think carefully about what the best option would be. This could be on what to have for their tea, how they want to spend their pocket money or which pair of shoes they want for school.

Question

It’s important to question things as they encourage us to gain new insights and knowledge. You can help your child to get into the habit of questioning things by posing different questions to them and also encouraging them to consider different perspectives.

Play Games

Games can help children with their critical thinking too. A few to name are Monopoly, Connect Four, Scrabble and Snakes and Ladders.
