[AD*] Parenthood is exhausting, to begin with, but if you talk about parenting a teen, the challenge is at a whole different level. Unlike kids, teenagers do not need your full assistance for their everyday tasks. Rather, they need privacy to explore all the physical and hormonal changes. Being overly involved in their life can make them feel irritated or frustrated.

At the same time, your teens need your support to become independent and make the right decision. Giving them “space” without proper guidance can increase the chances of your kids getting caught up in wrongful acts such as sexual assault, molestation, or internet solicitation.

Involvement of your child in such disheartening scenarios is indeed difficult to believe, but you must not let your guards down.

Having said that, below are some ways in which you can get more involved in your teen’s life without hindering their “personal space.”

How to be more involved in your teens life

Respect their desire to be alone

The need to stay alone is quite common among teenagers. It allows them to focus on their thoughts and all the changes they are experiencing. For this, you may observe your kids putting the DND sign on their room or ask you to knock on the door before you enter. However, parents often associate this behavior with a poor attitude or even disrespect towards the elders. Well, that’s surely not the case.

It is all part of teen development and fluctuating hormones. More often than never, the hurtful behaviour of your child is unintentional. So you must respect their desire to stay alone while continuing to remind them that you are right by their side if they ever need to talk about something.

Understand the cause of their frustration

Is your child suddenly behaving oddly? Do you observe the signs of irritability, anger, or frustration? Is your child avoiding even casual small talks with you? If your answer to these questions is a yes, it could turn out to be a matter of grave concern, and you must not neglect it. You need to make efforts to understand their cause of frustration.

Generally, when the change in a child’s behaviour is sudden, it is associated with peer pressure or a romantic affair. It is your sign to have “the talk” with your teen. It is essential to protect them from false allegations of sex crimes. However, if your child is already indulged in such allegations, you must get in touch with a sex crimes attorney and formulate a strategy to protect them. An attorney can help collect the evidence that will help build the defence. Additionally, they can guide the teen about the right and wrong acts. Nevertheless, trust your child and support them during this period.

Learn how to listen actively

Active listening can go a long way in protecting and improving your bond with your child. It becomes even more crucial if your child speaks to you occasionally. Listening attentively will give them the confidence to talk to you about different topics.

But what exactly is active or attentive listening? It simply means listening to your child to understand their perspective and not merely responding to them. Let them make mistakes, as it will help them grow and become a better version of themselves. You can guide them about the right and wrong ways but allow them to make their own decisions. If they share anything with you, listen to it with patience and open-mindedness. You can ask them a few questions to keep the conversation going. But, make sure the questions are open-ended and do not create tension in the atmosphere, spoiling the conversation.

Set a schedule for family bonding

Last but not least, to stay involved in your teen’s life, you must spend some quality time together. You can create a specific schedule that allows every family member to sit together and chat. It could be at the dinner table, or you can plan a family outing on weekends. It does not matter how much time you spend with your child. Instead, even the slightest of time must be valued and enjoyed as a family.

It is also a great opportunity for you to showcase your love, admiration, and support for your child. You can talk about your teenage years or any specific episode you remember. It will help create a strong bond between you and your teen.

Parenting a teenager requires immense patience to listen and understand the changes your beloved child is going through. At the same time, you must create some rules for the well-being and protection of your child. Focus on building a relationship where your child is comfortable sharing their opinion or experience without hesitation. It will allow you to help your child at every step.
