3 Ways to make spelling and grammar more fun

Highlight different words in language

When you’re looking at a sentence you can grab a bunch of different highlighters and indicate what the different parts of a sentence mean. Highlight nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions to get across what they all mean and do. This is where you can talk to your child about what they are used for and how they bring a sentence together.

Make sentence construction more exciting

A lot of schools and nurseries, including this Nursery in Amersham, will make sentences more intriguing and interesting to learn about by breaking things down into chunks. Another good way of thinking about sentence construction is imagining it as a three course meal, or something that has a beginning, middle and end.

For example, the main course will be a simple sentence that includes the subject and a verb:

“The cow mooed.”

A starter and a main course can include a new part to the sentence, like: “Yesterday, the cow mooed.”

Starter, main course and dessert means you are adding a connective to the sentence, such as: “Yesterday, the cow mooed because they were happy.”

Make deliberate mistakes in your writing

If you make an error in your writing, it’s a good time for your child to be tested in other ways. A lot of kids also love to find errors in what their parents do, as it can be a bit more entertaining for them. Deliberately doing it however ensures you know that what they are suggesting is correct, and they’re still learning about spelling and grammar.

Grammar and spelling are both very important areas of a child’s development, but it doesn’t mean it should be an ordeal to teach to your child. If anything else, following the curriculum plan that your child’s school follows, is a good, foolproof approach.
