Understanding your child's learning style.

[AD*] The way in which we process information is different. Some people like to read information in order to understand it, whereas others prefer to have it explained verbally. This is called a learning style. Understanding your child’s learning style will be very beneficial to them because you will be in a better position to support them academically. I have teamed up with a school to share some more information. 

First and foremost, it’s worth noting that there are three primary learning styles: auditory, kinaesthetic, and visual. Some people will cross over into more than one of these learning styles, but usually there is a more dominant one.

Different learning styles.

Auditory Learners

As the name suggests, auditory learners tend to process information most effectively by listening. They usually prefer listening to music or audiobooks over reading a book. They might also be stronger at verbal communication and find classroom discussions more engaging. 

Kinaesthetic Leaners

Kinaesthetic learners are more physical and prefer hands on learning methods. They are usually drawn to school subjects that require physical activity, like PE, drama, art or even science, as this involves a lot of practical work. They like to feel things and engage all of their senses while studying and tend to find it difficult to sit still for long periods of time.

Visual Learners

Visual learners typically absorb information better when it is presented with pictures and graphs, or even as videos. They are fairly observant and tend to remember small details. They might also enjoy reading and might use lots of coloured pens and highlighters when studying.

Once you understand which learning style is most applicable to your child, you will be able to provide them with suitable study materials, which will help them succeed. Have a chat with their teachers if you’re not sure, as they will be able to help you identify their learning style.
