No relationship is perfect. Every relationship takes commitment and work, each and every day - they are not easy at all! You continuously have another person's feelings to consider. There will of course be times when you do not agree, but that doesn’t mean you are not good for each other; it's normal. I'm currently in a 2-year relationship and this one has definitely taught me a lot not only about relationships, but about myself.
There are certain rules that are important in a relationship to keep it healthy and for it to work long-term. Here are 8 key things couples need to remember when in a relationship:

8 Things couples need to remember when in a relationship.
1. Communication Is Vital.
It is imperative that you communicate effectively, so that you can share your thoughts and feelings. There may be situations where you or your partner is upset at one another, but it is important that you communicate how you are feeling, so that you can resolve your differences. If you do not tell your partner how you are feeling, how are they supposed to know? Also, how are you supposed to move forward?
Communication is not just about disagreements; it is key to voice to your partner when you are happy too. You should let them know when they have made you laugh, smile or are making you happy. Your partner will know what is making you happy and they get to learn more about you. Knowing that it is appreciated is a warm and lovely feeling.
Communication is really important if you are in a long-distance relationship like myself. To keep the connection alive and show your partner the attention they will need and put in the effort.
2. Listen To Each Other And Show Support.
In a relationship, you want to feel listened to and supported, which will be the same for your partner. When your partner is talking to you about their day, or how they are feeling, it is important that you listen intently. Your partner will feel noticed. As you grow together, you want to feel supported in new ventures and as a partner. Engaging in what your partner is telling you makes them feels supported and special.
When starting new ventures whether that is in your relationship or in other areas of your daily life, it can be very daunting. When you are going through changes and daunting times having your partner's support is so important.
3. Show Affection Often.
Everyone wants to feel loved, cared for and wanted. When in a long-term relationship, you especially need to make sure that you are showing your partner affection. When you feel your love one’s affection, it makes you feel wanted. Showing love and affection towards each other daily keeps that honeymoon phase alive.
Life can get busy and schedules sometimes mean that you are passing ships, so making the effort to kiss and hug your partner every day and every night is essential. That close connection helps to grow the relationship.

4. Having Quality Time Together.
Spending quality one-on-one time with your partner should be high on both your priorities list. When life gets busy, it is very easy not to schedule time together, or be too tired to make a ‘date night’. Even making the smallest of gesture such as: making and eating dinner together allows you to chat and connect. Taking time without devices means that you are focused on each other and you can do something fun or relaxing.
5. Be Honest.
Honesty is a key element to a successful and fulfilling relationship. Being open and honest with your partner is key to building trust. Do not hide things or lie because that can cause misunderstanding or arguments. You do not want your partner to find something out by another means as they could feel hurt, disappointed or betrayed. Open and honest discussion is beneficial for a healthy relationship.
6. Practise Forgiveness.
Everybody makes mistakes; we are all human. If your partner has made a mistake, if you care about them, you will have to learn to forgive them. Holding grudges and using the mistakes against them in a disagreement causes a toxic relationship and that is not what you want. Setting boundaries early on in your relationship will give both of you the opportunity to voice "mistakes" you will not tolerate and what your limits are. This makes sure that both of you start on the right footing and know what to expect from one another.
7. Never Go To Bed Upset.
Going to bed angry can show you the value of winning an argument over you partner. Feelings of anger cause people to lash out, avoiding taking responsibility and can even lead to criticism. When you go to bed angry, you are telling your partner that they are less important to you than winning the argument.
Scientists have found evidence to support the idea that negative emotional memories are harder to resolve after a night’s sleep. Life is too short to go to bed upset. It can then lead to having a bad nights sleep which will cause a low mood and could cause you to be more irritable than usual - this could cause more arguments!
8. Disagreements Are Normal.
Disagreements and frustrations are completely normal and it is natural to disagree. The important thing is to communicate through any disagreements. Showing understanding and respect should always be remembered in a relationship. As human beings we are likely to disagree on certain things because we all have our own opinions and thoughts. As long as you approach the disagreements with an open mind and maturity you can move past them.
Relationships are a lot of work, but when you are with the right person, the value will be completely worth it. These are just some points that couples should remember to enjoy a happy and healthy relationship.

What do you think couples should remember in a relationship? What is one piece of advice you would give to new couples? I’d love to hear in the comment.

Thank you for letting me guest post. I hope this post can be helpful for some people.
You know, I used to be a big believer in #7, but as I've learned more about hte physiology and neurology of sleep and emotion, how they're related, I actually think sleeping off anger isn't the worst thing a couple can do. Part of what happens during sleep is the brain filtering emotion through the body to store memories more accurately, which is why we often think more clearly after a night's sleep. It can be helpful to let sleep siphon off some of your emotion, then tackle the problem the next morning. However, going to sleep with an attitude of "this can be fixed" is far healtheir than just stewing on your frustration while you toss and turn. Perhaps #7 ought to read "don't go to bed without hope/determination."
These points are so important for people to remember when in a relationship! x

Great post. My partner have been together 7 years this December and this relationship has taught me a lot. I feel like we’re in a better place than ever at the moment both as a couple and as individuals and I feel like the fact that we’re both in a better place individually has impacted the relationship so positively x
Great tips here! Because of previous relationships, me and my partner both find it difficult to have disagreements so that point definitely applied to us.
Some lovely reminders to practice in a relationship. I think we all need to me mindful of these things and take moments to make sure we are connected to our loved one in a way that is meaningful and fulfilling. Great post!
Love this post and I totally agree, also time together. Even if it is just watching a film or cooking together, it's the little things!
Relationships are scary 🙁

There's so many great tips here, almost felt like I needed to read this right now esp as our relationship has changed again since having another baby xx
Great post Lauren.
OH and I have been together for 30 years now!
I think that flexibility and compromise are very useful attributes (preferably from both parties!) - you don't have to do everything together, you don't have to agree on everything. If your partner really enjoys a particular TV programme and you hate it - don't fall out over it, read a book, or just go and do something else for an hour.
And never forget those three little words (I Love You). It sounds corny but what really drilled this home for me was some song lyrics. Specifically, 'If tomorrow never comes' by Garth Brooks. Now, I'm not generally a fan of Country music but my wife is (see, it's that flexibility and compromise thing again!) and I was listening to this song in the car and the singer muses about whether, if he were to die in his sleep, his partner know how much he loved her.
"If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her"
- Garth Brooks
Would your partner know? ...
What a fab post, 100% agree with all of these!

Communication is the most important thing I think, talking to one another about the good, the bad and the feelings in between. SO many important things covered in this post.
