6 Ways to save money on household expenses.
Reduce your broadband bill.
There are so many suppliers out there, which is great news for you. It’s very easy for you to cut down on your broadband and phone bills if you simply make a switch. If you want to get the best deal then you need to try and call your supplier, and you need to ask them for a better price. You can use a price comparison site if you want to get a better price too. Make sure that your new contract matches your lifestyle, and also make sure that you get enough data to cover you for everything you need. If you know that your provider isn’t going to give you a new or better price, then swap as you normally would. If you have kids who use the internet, keep in mind their usage when calculating your package.
Cut down your water usage.
You might not be able to swap water suppliers, but there are ways for you to save on your bills. It may be that you get a water meter installed or that you take less baths and more showers. You may also want to try and swap to a shower head that is much more efficient. If you have kids, having baths can be easier, so just make the effort to fill the tub up less.
Change your energy tariff.
As a consumer, you can knock a huge amount of money off your gas and energy bill. The only thing that you need to do is change your energy tariff. There are many energy providers out there who are constantly trying to compete for customers, so now would be a good time for you to try and find yourself a cheaper deal. It’s also wise for you to try and save energy by turning off any lights when you aren’t in the room, and by turning down your thermostat by one degree.
Car insurance doesn't have to be expensive.
If you have a car then you may think that this is one of your biggest expenses overall. If you want to make sure that you get the best result out of your payments then you shouldn’t reduce your cover, but you should try and change suppliers if possible. One Sure Insurance are a great option if you want a cheap deal without compromising coverage for you or your family. This is especially the case if you have a large family car.
Pay bills on time.
Another thing that you need to do is pay all of your bills on time. You have to know that late payments can wipe out your savings, so you have to make sure that you pay your bills immediately. If you want to stop forgetting about your bills, then set them up on an automatic direct debit. You should also talk to someone if you know that you are struggling and that you cannot afford your bills for any reason at all.
Save Money on your Weekly Shop
To save money on your food shop, start by planning meals in advance and making a shopping list to avoid impulse purchases. Look for supermarket deals, use discount apps, and consider buying in bulk for non-perishable essentials. Opt for store brand products instead of premium labels, as they often offer the same quality at a lower price. Reducing food waste by using leftovers creatively can also stretch your budget further. Lastly, take advantage of loyalty programs and cashback offers to maximize your savings each week.

Hi Claire,
Some useful information there for sure. I think it's useful to periodically do a sort of household expenses audit - look at all of your household expenditure and see if there are areas that you can improve.
As you say, broadband costs are often a good choice. You need to embrace your inner haggler! Roadside assistance with the RAC? Just before renewal, phone and tell them that Green Flag are much cheaper and that you are thinking of switching - it's amazing how a little incentive can motivate them to reduce that renewal cost!
This is such a useful post! Definitely check other providers for energy and broadband: Quite often we turn to the most popular one but there are so many ‘smaller’ ones who provide the same good service if not better! Also when the time comes to upgrade your phone, you have to question yourself do you really need that brand new phone or can you keep the phone you have now and lower your tariff, switch to sim only? Thanks for these tips!
This is super helpful! We do a check most months and get rid of any unnecessary direct debits too! Some may be just £2.99 etc but it adds up! X
I am all for switching utilities and the recent gas issue has seen a spike in competitor brands, it's mad!
Great tips, thank you
