AD. I don’t know about you but I cannot function properly when I feel like my home is cluttered with items. I need to go through my things often and get rid of things that I don’t see myself using anymore.

Most people do this of course, before and around New Year’s time but I personally like going through a wardrobe decluttering session every season. I tend to focus on bigger home tasks in the summer and prepare extra earlier and take winter things out before summer ends. I started to practice more intentional purchasing so I have gotten a lot better with my things and don’t need to declutter as often!

I generally now like to refresh my home decor in the different areas of my home. For me, decluttering is a form of self-care and it makes me feel a lot better once I get it done.

I’ll be the first to admit that I am a terrible cleaner and it takes me a really long time to do things but time is so important to me so I NEEDED to find a way to make decluttering enjoyable and something that I would look forward to doing.

How often do you do a good wardrobe decluttering your home? Let me know in the comments below!

Here Is The Ultimate Guide To Wardrobe Decluttering:

Storage boxes

You want to set yourself up for success early on and having different storage boxes and places to store your belongings really makes a difference.

For myself when I don’t have different storage boxes that have specific things or item categories in them, I tend to just put things away and it just feels like I am just moving it and not really finding a home for it.

Some really great places to get storage bins are places like IKEA, Amazon, Container Store, Walmart or really any home good stores local. An awesome place to look at well is thrift shops or second-hand marketplaces.

Once you've decluttered your wardrobe, it's essential to optimise your space with the right storage solutions. Consider upgrading your closet with sturdy wardrobe hanging rails to keep your clothes organised and easily accessible.

Donation, Recycling and Trash Bin Ready

The whole point of wardrobe decluttering is getting rid of stuff that does not have a purpose or place in your life anymore. This means you’ll need to be donating, recycling and throwing things out.

Have a place for all 3 so that you’re not tempted to keep anything when you’ve made the decision to let go of the item. Another thing that you can do is see if any friends or family could use the item you’re giving away! It definitely feels great to be re-home something of yours to something close to you.

But at a certain point, though, storage boxes can only do so much, especially if the real issue is that your wardrobe space just doesn’t suit how you actually get ready every day. But think about it: the point of decluttering is so you can start fresh, so maybe you can start curating with much more intention here. So, if you’re constantly rearranging clothes, shoes, bags and seasonal pieces just to make everything fit, then ideally, considering a luxury bespoke dressing room can absolutely be a more permanent way to give everything a proper home instead of having the same decluttering session over and over again.

Scheduling a Time for Pick Up

I know, scheduling a time for your donations pickup is a commitment but you’ll feel much better to know that it’ll get taken care of sooner than later and you’ll feel the weight off your shoulders immediately.

After you’ve filled up a bag, be sure to tie it up and set it aside for pickup. Label all your bags to ensure that you’re not getting things mixed up and that you’ll have less work to remember prior to pick up.

Good Music or Podcast

Oh, this I stand by forever! Whenever I’m cleaning, having some good tunes or interesting podcasts keeps me going! If I could suggest anything is to not have songs that get you in the feels. It’s so easy to lose your cleaning momentum so fill your playlist with lots of upbeat songs or even true crime to keep you on your toes!

Keep your phone on DND and have the music blasting or at least a bit louder than normal and sing/dance your heart out while you are going through your wardrobe declutter session.

Asking Yourself Lots of Questions

Last but not least, while you’re in the process of decluttering, you should be asking yourself a lot of questions. A few questions to ask yourself are:

  1. Am I going to look for this item within the next 3-6 months?
  2. If yes, how long will it sit before you use it? Is it worth keeping?
  3. Does this item properly do what it’s designed to do?
  4. Is this item something I could easily replace?

Whenever I'm having a good sort out of my bedroom and wardrobe, I need to have my music on! It makes the task so much more fun. I had a massive wardrobe clearout a little while back and it made me feel so much better, especially as I donated a lot of the items

I love nothing more than a good decluttering! I did this recently and started selling some of my clothes on Vinted - I've held back on buying anything else to fill the space so far but I really want a cream shacket for Autumn!
Great tips, love a good clear out!

Love this! We recently did our walk in wardrobe so it was the perfect time for a cull! I did a keep, donate and Chuck pile and got rid of so much I was holding on to! One thing I find hardest to part with his pjs though haha! I love my pjs.

I've recently done a huge declutter and if I've not worn it in about 8 months, and don't plan on wearing it during the winter, I'm getting rid of it either to a clothes bank or charity!

    Honestly makes such a difference+

I love a good declutter! I also switch my wardrobe round between seasons and pack things away in storage boxes under the bed that I won't be wearing in winter such as summer dresses - it makes my wardrobe so much neater!

Those vacuum pack bags are my fave to use - especially as I start to sort out and sell more of the children's clothes I've kept over the years

Love these tips! I’m honestly terrible at decluttering, although I have gotten better in organizing, so that helps. I just put sentimental value on every piece for some reason 🙈
