AD. You are seated in front of a window with a table. You have removed your jacket; however, you still have your luggage stuffed into the space behind your chair. In addition, your cell phone is dying, and as you look out onto the street, people are walking down the sidewalk, talking in a language that only slightly sounds familiar. The next thing you know, there is a piping hot plate of pasta in front of you.

Your Familiar Food Offers Solace Against Unfamiliar Surroundings

Travel can be exhausting, whether or not it’s fun. You’re figuring out signs, looking at maps, arranging for transportation, and desperately trying not to look lost. At times like these, food isn’t just about taste; it’s about respite.

For most travelers, Italian cuisine has this comforting quality simply because it provides familiarity without necessarily feeling boring. While you may have no clue which neighborhood you’re in, you probably know what tomatoes, basil, olive oil, bread, cheese, and pasta are. Those common ingredients evoke a certain level of reassuring silence.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have everything else exactly as it was back home. Just give yourself some peace of mind during the day.

The Tempo Allows For A Slower Pace

At many Italian restaurants, a meal is considered something you shouldn’t rush. Even though the setting may be casual, there is typically a natural cadence to how meals unfold. Sit. Look. Order. Talk. Wait a bit.

This type of waiting can be oddly soothing while traveling. It helps create boundaries around your day. Unlike grabbing something quick to eat between two activities, you have the opportunity to settle into your current surroundings. It is comforting when someone allows you to spend your time as you see fit.

The Menu Is Typically Simple Yet Generous

It is unusual for a good menu in Italian restaurant to confuse customers. Most of them will have choices in very general categories.  Customers can understand the basic menu categories even if they do not know what some items are called.

By the time you get home from trying to navigate a city all day, it has been exhausting. It has taken you hours to find your way around using street maps, read sign postings, wait in line for ticket purchases, etc. There may be little or no energy remaining to evaluate several different options.

Mostly, customers want something that looks “safe”, but also unique, so that it indicates the end of their day.  Italian restaurants strike a perfect balance between pleasing their customers and providing minimal choice burdens.

More Than The Food Provides Comfort

Other elements provide similar feelings of comfort. Glasses clinking. Garlic wafting from other tables. Bread arrived earlier than anticipated. The nod from your server when you ordered correctly.

These small details can remain with you when you are traveling, not because they were significant, but rather because they made you feel cared for. Sometimes, it is precisely what you need from a meal in a country that is far away from home.
