ADPR. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that the British weather keeps us on our toes. Especially at this time of year! One moment you’re basking in unexpected sunshine, and the next you’re wishing you’d packed an umbrella. Dressing for this in-between season can be really tricky. Too warm for winter coats, yet too chilly for summer dresses! This is where transitional dressing comes into its own. It’s all about building a wardrobe that works hard for you, whatever the forecast. In collaboration with Cotton Traders and their Full of Surprises campaign, we’ll explore how one outfit, made up of a few versatile pieces can take you seamlessly from sunshine to showers. Proving that style really can adapt with the weather. Thank the lord!

What Is Transitional Dressing?

Put simply, transitional dressing is about bridging the gap between summer and autumn (and again between winter and spring). It’s the art of layering, and mixing and matching pieces that can be styled in multiple ways to suit unpredictable weathers.

Think lightweight knits over floaty dresses, ankle boots paired with bare legs, or a trench coat you can shrug on when the wind picks up. The goal isn’t to overhaul your wardrobe each season, but instead to make the most of versatile staples that can flex with the forecast. This not only saves money but makes everyday dressing far less stressful. Which at this time of year, I think is a must!

The Awkward In-Between

September and October are notorious for weather whiplash! One day feels like late summer, the next hints of winter. It leaves us stuck in the same cycle: staring at the wardrobe, unsure whether to reach for sandals or boots.

It’s not just about temperature, either. The morning school run might be cool and breezy, but by lunchtime you’re overheating in layers. Add in the UK’s trademark drizzle, and it’s no wonder transitional fashion feels so tricky to master.

Thankfully you don’t need a whole new wardrobe to solve the problem. Just a few carefully chosen transitional outfits that adapt as quickly as the forecast changes.

Quick Tips for Mastering Transitional Dressing

  • Layer smarter, not bulkier. Think lightweight cardigans, scarves, and gilets that add warmth without the bulk of a full coat.
  • Carry a “just in case” item. A neutral cardigan perhaps that folds neatly into your bag can be a lifesaver when clouds roll in.
  • Mix textures for balance. Pair lightweight cotton with a soft knit, or denim with more breezy fabrics. This creates depth and comfort, whatever the temperature.
  • Play with colour palettes. Neutrals provide a timeless base, but add pops of seasonal colour such as rust, mustard or berry tones to bring an outfit firmly into autumn.
  • Invest in footwear versatility. Ankle boots and trainers are the perfect in-between shoes, carrying you through sunny afternoons and soggy mornings alike.

Introducing Cotton Traders

Cotton Traders was brought to life in 1987 by former England rugby teammates Fran and Steve, who knew firsthand the challenge of finding clothing that felt comfortable, looked good, and could keep up with everyday life. What began with classic rugby shirts quickly grew into a trusted British brand, which now offers a wide range of collections designed with real people in mind.

At the heart of Cotton Traders is the belief that comfort should never mean compromising on style. Their pieces are made to live in. Whether that’s walking the dog, heading out for errands, or enjoying brunch with friends. Thoughtful details, like elasticated waists, wrinkle-free finishes and easy-care fabrics, make getting dressed feel effortless.

I have three pieces from their new in collection which I think will be perfect for transitional dressing. Let's take a look at how we can style them for this awkward in-between time of year.

For me these are all basic pieces. The type of pieces that easily fit within your autumn capsule wardrobe. Because like we said, your transitional wardrobe should be utilising versatile staples. You don't need to spend a fortune buying a whole new wardrobe.

Transitional Dressing in Warmer Weather

For warmer weather I will be styling the neutral toned wide leg jeans and charcoal graphic print tee.

What I like about this t-shirt is that it feels quite summery because of the print, but the colour feels very autumnal. For me it's the perfect transitional piece. And it's really easy to style!

I'm not a big jeans wearer. In fact the only jeans I wear are from Cotton Traders, and that's because of how comfortable they are. They're cotton rich denim with a stretch that is extremely forgiving! They're snug, great on the bum, yet stretchy enough that they're comfortable for all day wear!

I've styled the two Cotton Traders pieces with chocolate brown flip flops, my go-to Ganni leopard print bag, and gold jewellery. For me, this is such an easy outfit to throw on. I'll be clinging onto this outfit for as long as possible! Which knowing the Great British weather could be anywhere between a couple of days and a couple of months.

Transitional Dressing in Colder Weather

For colder weather I will be utilising all three items from Cotton Traders. I will be styling the graphic print tee and wide leg jeans with the dark chestnut jumper. Only I'm styling it two ways, because at this time of year the weather is certainly 'weathering'.

The soft relaxed jumper has got to be my favourite piece of the three. Not only is it extremely versatile, but it's extremely comfortable, cosy, and easy to wear. This piece is going to be in my wardrobe for many years to come, I'm sure! What I will say about this particular piece however is that it's really warm! For this time of year it's possibly a little bit too warm (which is why I've styled it two ways), but I know come October and November it'll never be off my back.

I've styled the tree Cotton Traders transitional pieces with neutral trainers (although I'm currently on the look out for some neutral coloured boots, which I think would work equally well). I've styled this with my new barn jacket and trusty sage crossbody bag which fits a surprising amount in!

To Conclude

Transitional dressing doesn’t have to feel like a struggle. With a handful of well-chosen pieces and a few simple styling tricks, you can create outfits that adapt to the ever changing British climate.

Whether it’s an unexpectedly warm September afternoon or a blustery October morning, the right transitional wardrobe staples will see you through. Because when your clothes are as versatile as the weather is unpredictable, you’ll always feel prepared!...And stylish no matter what the forecast brings!

It's hard to know what to wear when the temperatures and weather are fluctuating so much! I love the jumper you're wearing in this photo. I bet it feels warm and super cosy to wear! x

One of the best things about living in a four-season country ~ you get to wear different kinds of outfits according to the seasons. I wish I could cozy up in sweaters and hoodies. But Malaysia is just too hot for that.
