Signs you need a new car

Your financial situation has changed

Perhaps you’ve just come into some money or you’ve been given a raise at work? Now might be the time to purchase the vehicle you’ve always wanted. Just remember that cars with a higher price tag will also come with higher maintenance costs and insurance premiums.

Similarly, you don’t want to be living above your means. If you find that the cost of owning your vehicle is becoming too much, consider selling your current one and opting for a less expensive model. There are plenty of used cars available on the market as well, meaning you could find yourself a great deal.

Your mileage is getting high

If you have a long commute to work or travel long distances to see friends and family, you may have clocked up a lot of miles on your car. With these miles comes wear and tear, which sometimes can’t be fixed.

As a rule of thumb, try not to exceed 100,000 miles in your car or drive the same motor for more than 14 years. If you find yourself surpassing either, you should most definitely consider a new model.

Your vehicle constantly needs repairing

A car that is prone to breaking down is a risk to you and other road users. The last thing you want is to break down on the motorway. If you find these occurrences are weekly or monthly, avoid going to a mechanic and look for a new car instead.

Replacing major parts in certain cars can be so expensive it’s not even worth keeping the car – remember, cars depreciate the longer you have them anyway. That’s not to say a single repair should be the leading cause of making another purchase, just be aware that once cracks start to form, plan ahead to avoid any further repercussions.

Your living circumstances have changed

There are various lifestyle changes that warrant getting a new vehicle, from moving further afield from your place of work to expanding your family

While your car may originally have been the perfect fit for you, it may now feel cramped, especially with young children. That two-seater sports car isn’t ideal for fitting car seats in the back so you’ll likely need to swap it out.

It may be that you are struggling to fit all of your belongings into the vehicle or maybe your work requires you to carry lots of equipment. If this is the case, try and find a vehicle with sufficient interior and boot space to make those journeys easier and safer.
