Y2K fashion takes us back (like it's that long ago) to the biggest trends of the late 90's and early 2000's. It fuses pop culture of the millennium with bright colours and cutesy aesthetics for an unapologetic maximalist look. Y2K style offers a mix between eccentric and chic, showcasing a bold statement style. Think tight tees, wide leg cargo pants, chunky trainers and colourful accessories. This is a trend that allows for plenty of experimentation, and plenty of fun!

Y2K is a playful trend that plays homage to the average 30 year old's childhood. It's seen as a 'young persons trend', after all, we did all this twenty years ago. Do we really need to do it all again? Can we really do it again?

We're seeing the likes of Tammy Girl and Juicy Couture back in circulation again, and because of this high street retailers are following suit. It's good business and a great way for clothing companies to make money, but it's also great fun. The Y2K trend is a fantastic way to have fun with fashion again!

How To Nail Y2K Outfits As A 30+ Woman

Dressing in your thirties can feel like such a predicament. It's such an awkward in between age which done incorrectly can either leave you feeling old before your time or dressing like you're trying to relive your youth.

Y2K Outfit Essentials

Let's start simple! An easy way of incorporating the Y2K trend into your everyday outfit is with a baguette bag. These small, iconic, over the shoulder bags were everywhere in the 90's/00's with many people saying we had Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw to thank! You'll see these types of bags all over the charity shop scene, and for me the brighter, more embellished the better. Look our for beaded baguette bag to add a pop of colour to your outfit.

Wide Leg Denim Jeans

For me the one thing I've learnt as I've gotten older, fashion wise, is that comfort is key! Y2K outfits live up to this mantra perfectly! You need to add wide leg denim jeans to your shopping list. If you're brave enough a low rise style would be ideal, however if you're postpartum like me or not that comfortable with your abdomen area, high waisted will do just fine. Remember, fashion is supposed to be fun... And there's nothing fun about uncomfortable jeans. You can still incorporate this style of fashion into your wardrobe no matter how body confident you are.

Metallics

Please tell me you remember the incredible metallic outfits that were rife in 90's music videos. I'm talking the likes of P.Diddy, Missy Elliot, TLC. It was such a vibe! And whilst this might not be fashion you can do the school run in (woe is me, right?) there's still ways you can showcase Y2K metallics in your everyday 30+ outfits. A metallic puffer jacket would be incredible, although if this is a bit too daring, you could opt for metallic tracksuit bottoms or a halter neck top. The only thing I'd say with this trend is that less is more. Let your metallics do the talking! I wouldn't overly accessorise when wearing a show stopping metallic piece.

Baby Tees

Y2K baby tees are the epitome of 90's fashion! Mid-riff baring tops have been on the scene for quite some time now, however the key with this trend is to keep your tee tight and bright! Bold coloured tees work best, or those with colourful prints. Again, it's all about having fun with fashion. To make this work for myself personally, I'd team a Y2K store baby tee with a wider bottom half to balance the silhouette. I've saved the best till last, right? Butterfly clips can add a youthful look to your Y2K outfits. They're easy to pull off and offer practicality as well as style. I'd recommend doing half up half down with your butterfly clips to really encapsulate the trend however a simple two clips either side to hold your tresses back will look just as trendy.
