How to teach your child to respect other cultures.

Equality

The great thing about us humans is that we’re all unique. We’re all special in our own way. We come in lots of different colours, have a variety of features and despite them, we are all equal. We all deserve to be treated fairly and with kindness and teaching this is fundamental for raising a child with respect for other cultures.

Explore

Travelling gives children the opportunity to learn about different cultures first-hand. They are able to observe what different lifestyles are like, connect with the people and in the process become aware of how big the world actually is.

Education

Educating yourself is important for respecting other cultures. It can help you to be aware of the things that cause offence and understand the struggles of those from different backgrounds.

Pen Pals

Writing to friends from across the world can give children the opportunity to learn and help respect other cultures. They can become more open minded by seeing life from a new perspective and even help them to start thinking about their own.

Stereotypes

Stereotypes can be harmful and offensive. They can influence your child’s opinions and lead to prejudice. It’s important to challenge them if ever your child presents them.

Celebrate Together

What a better way to teach children to respect other cultures than to celebrate them? Cultural and religious celebrations like Eid, Diwali, Thanksgiving and The Chinese New Year all give children the opportunity to learn about other cultures and pay their respect.
