10 Ways to Create a Cosy Home

AD. We've spent more time in our homes over the last couple of years than we'd have like to. We've been forcibly house bound, trapped within the same four walls sometimes for hours on end. Seems torturous looking back on things now, but because of this, house renovations are at the forefront of a lot of peoples minds. In September of last year we moved into our forever home, which in itself came with a big old to do list of renovations. Something that's imperative for us is trying to make our house feel as cosy and homely as possible. We've got a big old to do list! Here are ten ways you can also create a cosy home.

How To Create A Cosy Home

1. Textures, Textures And More Textures.

A super easy way of creating cosiness in your home is by using different textures. Raw, natural wood panels can bring an immense amount of warmth into your home. I'd love to inject some natural warmth into our bedroom with wood panelling. Rugs are an easy addition which can make your living room cosier as well as other rooms in the house. We've got plenty of engineered wood flooring which needs covering. Adding rugs and other textured fabrics can also make homes more energy efficient.

2. Great Bedding

Great bedding can make the world of difference when it comes to creating a cosy bedroom space. I'm talking everything from luxury bed sheets and pillowcases to the actual pillow and duvets inside. Imagine sinking into a luxury bamboo pillow and duvet set! Now that would be the dream! Again we'll be adding textures to our bedroom space with throws and scatter cushions.

3. A Definitive Office Space

At the beginning of the pandemic I found myself working from either the sofa or the bed. I was tucked up under the duvet leant against the wall or arm of the chair with the laptop on my lap. Sounds cosy right? Actually it was quite the opposite - And rather uncomfortable. I now have a dedicated office space which increases my productivity and makes me love working from home that little bit more. It feels like by having a dedicated work space I've gained my home back.

4. A Warm Home Is A Cosy Home

A cosy home is a warm home, that goes without saying right? We've been quite unlucky with houses and have now bought two unbearably cold homes. We moved into our new home in September and after insulating the loft and having new cavity wall insulation fitted a new boiler installation is the last thing on our list. These are all expensive jobs, but really important ones for creating a warm home. We will have a cosy house by the end of this!... Probably just in time for Summer, ey?

5. A lived In Home Is A Cosy Home

I might offend a number of people here, but to me there is nothing less homely than grey interiors, mirrored furniture and slightly too tidy homes. To me a cosy home is a lived in home. There's pictures of you and your family dotted around the house. Children's artwork on the fridge. A cosy home conveys your personality, even if it is a little untidy. I want to see homes that are enjoyed, rather than 'Insta-perfect' homes.

6. Use Colour Wisely

Darker colours can be used to make your home feel more cosy. One of my favourite ways to add warmth to a room is by using a deep navy blue contrasted with brassy or copper tones. We've done this in my Husbands office and I just love it! I love the pairing together as it just oozes cosiness.

7. Use Scents To Create A Cosy Home

To me one of the cosiest scents when you walk into a home is that of good cooking. Granted, you don't cook just to make your house smell good, but there are a number of products available to buy which can help you do just that. Plug in air fresheners, reed diffusers and candles are super easy to pick up at the shop. Plus, if you're sensitive to allergens, your allergy air filter can work in tandem with different scents to create a perfect room atmosphere. With a scent list a mile long I'm sure you won't get stuck but for me some of the cosiest scents are vanilla, coffee and cinnamon. Delicious!

8. Clever Lighting

There is nothing further from cosiness than stark, bright white lighting. Why not soften the mood and create ambience whilst giving your home the ultimate cosy factor with really clever lighting. You could change to dimmer switches? This is something I wan't to do across the majority of our home. Or you can add interest to interior spaces with floor standing lights, up lights or even traditional picture lights. Lighting can really create a huge visual impact with interior design. It's important to get it right if you want to create a cosy home.

9. Personalised Artwork

Choosing personalised artwork or prints can totally transform your house into a home. I created a perfectly personal gallery wall in our previous home and will be doing the same in the new house once more structural renovations have been completed. A cosy house is a personalised house!

10. Scale & Proportion Is Everything!

You wouldn't want to leave vast untouched spaces within your house if you're trying to make it cosy. Even if you do have a large space available, you can scale down by sub sectioning areas off and creating cosy little nooks within that space. Using heightened pieces of furniture can keep warmth into a specific area too creating the ultimate cosy space.

Using these ten tips will sure transform your house into a cosy home. We've got all of them on our list to do in the new house. Granted some things are easier (and more price friendly) than others, but I'm excited to see what we can create over the next however long*
