With warmer weather fast approaching, many of us will be thinking about all trips and days out we can go on during our time off. Whether you want to go the seaside, explore a new city or learn more about the UK’s intriguing history, there’s a perfect summer day out for everyone.
However, if you’re worried about how much these excursions are going to cost, you’re certainly not alone. With rising fuel prices and costs across the board, it doesn’t hurt to make a few changes. And here are a few tips to get you started.

How to save money on days out
Look for deals on days out
Family discount sites are bristling with great deals that make a day out with the kids more affordable. From tickets and passes to discounts on experiences like theme parks, indoor sports and even holidays, you can save a whole heap of money.
Most of these sites require a subscription fee, but even these are cheap. Some are as low as £1 a month, making affordable days out that much easier.
Buy annual passes or memberships
They might seem like a blow to the wallet at first, but you’ll quickly make back your money with all the family trips you’re going to go on. If there’s somewhere that’s particularly special for you and the kids, like a zoo, National Trust property or walled gardens, annual passes give you the freedom to go whenever you like. Plus, if the kids love it so much, they’re unlikely to get bored!
You could also become a member of a heritage croup. The English Heritage, Historic Scotland or Cadw groups include great castles and landmarks. You can visit Carlisle Castle, Warkworth Castle or Lindisfarne Priory.
Take your own food
You might have made a saving on entrance fees. But food and drinks is where these places really make their money. Since you’re out and about in summer, why not take a picnic along to enjoy in the park or a National Trust heritage site? Not only will this save you lots of money, there’ll always be something that the kids like! And let’s be honest, we can’t turn our noses up at that.
Buy travel tickets in advance
If you don’t have a car or are avoiding massive fuel costs, then you might be better off with public transport. Buying these tickets in advance means you’re bound to find some great money-saving deals, even with popular routes like trains from York to Scarborough.
If you can’t find good deals, try searching for tickets during unpopular times. This means avoiding rush hour which, seeing as you’re enjoying some time off, that should be pretty easy.
